jens poulsenAny fresh thoughts on the .400 Holland & holland.
The more I get to read about the "B&M" cartridges, the more interesting they become.
Cartridges come and goes throughout times.Sometimes one can make a choice now that wasn´t there 50 years ago. I would say Crap it while you live, if you like it.

Now we have a highly respected commercial source for loaded B&M cartridges (due by the end of the year) - Superior Ammunition - and rifles being built by an also highly respected gun maker - SSK. Both are American companies whose reputations are known worldwide. I don't believe the same can be said of the .400H&H.
The Answer is yes... Superior Ammo has been loading the 400 H&H for almost two years and Dakota is chambering their rifles in 400H&H. Gulf Breeze out of Florida a major Dakota dealer is pushing the caliber hard and I know that NECG has made a few rifles in 400 H&H as well

LionHunterHey Zephyr-
The answer to what? I didn't ask a question. If I had asked a question I would have ended that sentence with a "?". Do you see a "?" anywhere in my post? Now, that was a question.
Larry can, and does, load almost any round ever made. I was not aware Dakota was producing a rifle in .400H&H and they DO NOT list it on their web catalog, which leads me to believe it is a custom order caliber. Gulf Breeze currently lists two Dakota rifles in .400H&H, one is a $12,995 76 African and the other a 76 African PH w/synthetic stock for $8,995. You consider that "...pushing the caliber hard..."? Hardly selling like hotcakes at those price points and a bit expensive for a production rifle in a custom caliber. One can easily be into a new DR for that money.
SSK builds the B&M rifles on a Winchester Mdl 70 WSM or WSSM action. Base price averages around $3,000. They will do anything your rifle will do but in a more compact package. But that's why we have a choice of Chevrolet or Cadillac, yes?

ZephyrLionHunter all I was trying to do was to respond to your statement "I don't believe the same can be said of the .400H&H", and to others when they ask whether the cartridge is here to stay.
Will it have the popularity of the 416s? probably not, will it be made in a rifle that has a price point that is within reach of most of us? perhaps, I re-barreled a new Win mod 70 and have less that $2k in mine. Will a Major cartridge manufacturer produce the 400H&H it is my understanding that it is in the near future.
I am aware that Gulf Breeze has sold at least 1/2 dozen in the last year that's not a bad start especially at that price point and know of at least another 1/2 dozen rifles that have been re-barreled plus a few of the AR folks that maybe planning for one in the future.
Like many of us we get a idea of a rifle and a cartridge and we run with it, is it the smartest thing to do? some times not, do you know how many .411 dia bullets are out there compared to .416 not many. Yet I've seen folks on this site get excited about a cartridge with even less components available and it's fun to see their enthusiasm grow.
Would I like a B&M rifle in my cabinet you bet perhaps some day when I grow tired of my 400H&H.
Keep shooting Keep posting I have always read your posts with interest.

Simply put, there is nothing discouraging to say about the B&M series of both cartridges and rifles. Every PH who has seen, handled and fired one and then seen the effect on DG, wants to own one. That's been my experience, and I have more than a little time in africa and hunting DG, using a variety of big bore rifles and cartridges prior to Michael's invention of the B&M calibers and rifles.

I didn't know there was a pissing contest concerning which was least obscure.

artshaw.411 Bullets ?
Barnes, Swift, Woodleigh should cover your needs.
As for the 400 H&H, cases are easily made from belted basics or 375 H&H. Qual Cartridge also runs them (that's where I got my 100).
Excellent cartridge that is very accurate and does not beat you to death.
Built one on a rebored 700 classic 300 H&H, worked just fine.
Also had an 1885 rebored to a .411/40-82 twisted for 400s. A bit hotter than a 400 Whelen and also very accurate.
BTW the H&H factory ammo uses the 400 gr Woodleigh RN which shoots like a match bullet.

GrenadierI replied with this in a post about .400H&H brass but I think it also fits here:
Just to see if it could be done, I've formed some 400H&H cases from loaded 300H&H ammunition simply by firing it. The cases end up just a little short but not by much at all. Loading up 300H&H cases with plugs and shooting them in the 400H&H should yield serviceable 400H&H brass. A new QualCart 400H&H case is 2.841" and a case from 300H&H ammunition fired in the 400H&H rifle is 2.796". That's a pretty small difference.
LEFT: .400H&H factory cartridge, RIGHT: Case made by firing .300H&H cartridge (Winchester) in a .400H&H rifle.
Case length differs by less than 0.05".
