John RicksThe 470 Capstick ReVisited: M70 Version
This one is about ready to ship, it's a M70 makeover. Started out as a Safari Express in 416 Rem. Now wears a Krieger heavy contour barrel, NECG Masterpiece sights, with recoil lug on the barrel. Stock is the original Winchester, but with a mercury recoil absorber in the butt and a Kick Eez pad. Weight is 11 pounds less scope, 11-3/4 pounds with the 2.5x scope in Leupold QRW mounts. Balances just aft of the front action screw, and recoil is up there but not painful. Front ramp has a red fiber optic bead.

Does the magazine hold two rounds, or three?
Thanks,
George

JudyJohn - how much work did you have to do on the action to get it to feed?

AtkinsonTake another look lad, thats a Leupold 2.5X compact me thinks....and a proper scope it is for that beast...

<David>I can hardly wait for John to get that on the brown truck and on its way to me. That's my rifle that John just finished and yes that is a 2.5x Leupold compact.
When it was a 416 Rem Mag, it easily held 3 down.

The issue with the capstick round is that the bullet is so wide (0.474" actually) that the cartridges stack wide in the mag box. Mauser 98's that hold 3 rounds of 375 H&H down can typically only hold 2 rounds of 470 capstick down without installing a custom extra deep magazine box from Sunny Hill or Ted Blackburn.
I am not a model 70 expert and this post is not intended as a comment or prediction as to how many rounds of 470 capstick a model 70 factory mag box would hold.

GeorgeSMy .470 Capstick wears a Burris 2.5x, and it has held up beautifully. I did pick up a Leupold 2.5x JUUUST in case the Burris fails.

500grainsGeorge, how many rounds down does your capstick hold?
Does it have the original unmodified Winchester magazine box?

John RicksYep, Ray is right as usual, had two rifles on the bench and forgot which scope was on the 470. I will edit the post. (I think there is something about being from Texas that gives one excellent eye vision)
And, I like the simplicity of a fixed scope, less to go wrong.
Hey 500g, the magazine holds three down and the action feeds like Ray's "Owl poop on a fence post". A nice touch, at more cost, would be Blackburn botom metal and more capacity, but this would get us into a new stock.
I am planning on chronographing loads next week.

GeorgeSAll right, John. What trickery and wizardry did you perform to get the factory M-70 magazine to hold three .470 Capstick rounds?????

GeorgeSGator1,
The Burris 1.75x-5x should do it. I bought one for my M-70 .470 Capstick, but I haven't gotten around to mounting it. The rifle wears a 2.5x for hunting; the 1.75x-5x is for range work and load development.

You or one of your close relatives wouldn't be from Big Bear Lake California, eh?
I used to know a very succesful real estate broker up there.

John RicksGeorge: Williams Bottom Metal and a 416 Rem follower. The 416 follower has a wider groove milled for the cartridge, it is thinner and is anodized aluminum.
Gator1: Talley's are back away from the port and the scope can be moved back. The bases on this rifle are Leupold QRW's.
Jerry: Nope, not from Big Bear area. All the succesful members of the Ricks Clan left prior to the War of Northern Aggression (The American Civil War), moved out of the poor south (Georgia) and became successful in Idaho, Utah and maybe California. My side of the clan stayed in the Georgia swamps, made moonshine whiskey, and went broke when the American Entertainment Economy turned to imported drugs.
