cr500Heym/ Merkel doubles
Ive decided that if I,m to get a new double ,the only ones I can afford are made by Heym or Merkel. How do these doubles compare to others in 470 NE? I,m not after a fine English gun, just an affordable, totaly reliable, reasonably accurate working double.

<eldeguello>I've had a couple of Heyms, but no Merkels or Krieghoffs.
The Heym is a quality product!!

cr500I was leaning towards the Heym myself. What cal were yours. Did they feel and look good. Where they (relitively)accurate?

JBoutfishnI own a Krieghoff 470, very happy with it. I handled a Merkel 140, coin finish, in 9.3x74, very very nice. Very high on my "want list"

AtkinsonI would opt for a 450-400 in a Jefferys, Army-Navy or Rhodda and they are in the ballpark your talking about price wise....and they are Enlish guns...
I have looked at an tried all the doubles and what amazes me is most of them are so ill stocked and don't point for squat....What is even more amazing is some of the owners don't even know this and actually believe that they point beatifully...The come by wanting to show them to me and when they put them to their shoulder, its apparant that the gun simply does not fit them for point shooting, but fortunatly the human body can adjust to an ill fitting gun in time....The salvation of many a stock maker.
The best new double I found was the new Searcy PH model, it is very close to English...I ordered one the other day and it is the first non-English gun I will have owned, its the first one that had that certain feel.....Now we'll see how it shoots..I expect to be able to hit a Buff in the eye at 50 yards if he is looking for me.

<eldeguello>cr, I hate to admit this, but my Heyms were: a .30/'06 and a 12 ga. shotgun! The '06 is a MOA rifle!

I have never owned a true big bore BREECH-LOADING double.

choppaI handled a Merkel in 470 nitro at the last gunshow in Melbourne, it was a bit short in the stock for me, but my knuckles drag on the ground

still a bloody nice double though, they had $9500 on it I wouldnt hesitate to own one and probably will in the next couple of years, I figure most people I know spend near on $12000 on a dirt bike and they drop in value like nothing, thats my excuse for spending money on a new rifle

at least if you go to piss it off you get close to your money back.
