SHARRC Blood: .395/310-grain Brass VeloHex, Hexploding Penetrator

RIPSHARRC Blood: .395/310-grain Brass VeloHex, Hexploding Penetrator
Another one-shot kill today, the hard way, a running doe at 60 yards in swampy woods along the creek bottoms pasture.
I had to thread the needle as she passed between trees, shooting from a tree stand. Timing of trigger yank was everything!
prof242 blooded the same .395/310-grain bullet first, by one-shot killing a cow elk with his .395 Ruger Max. The bullet exited on a chest shot.
The second harvest site, for the same bullet, and also second kill for the .395 Tatanka:
This is usually all I see of does, flashed at me as they flee across a pasture or deeper into the paw paw patch:
Mr. Peabody's coal train gave me the edge today. A mile-long, coal-hauling freight train was parked on the tracks about 400 yards from the harvest site, due to some sort of trouble at a curve where derailments have happened in the past.
About 7:30 AM as I was getting big-bored from blowing on the fawn bleater, a mile-long explosion started as the coal train started moving. There were sequential booms as the slack came out of the train and they banged off their air brakes or banged out their links (I don't know train noises) from a half mile east to a half mile west along the tracks.
What a racket!
The deer came running from deep in the swamp and passed before my stand, visible intermittently through the naked trees and brush:
Onside (left side) lumbar hit:
Offside (right side) flank exit:
The MV of the .395/310-grain brass hollowpoint was 2793 fps. In the 5-gallon water bucket train, it made it to the bottom of the third bucket, just like the .395/340-grain GSC HV 2745 fps MV. Powder charge is the same for both bullets (96.5 grains of H4350 Extreme), for fireforming load:
The entrance hole has about caliber size. The exit hole was about twice that, to the probing finger.
The entrance hole had an odd splatter on the fur as if back blast sprayed out of the entrance hole. It was not an acutely oblique entrance. It was just a little off normal.
The exit was approximately straight across, seemed to track straight, for the short path in the broadsided deer.
Impact point was far back and high on the bobbing doe, the hind legs collapsed, the doe went down, and immobility of all legs occurred within 5 seconds. The doe went nowhere.
Her lumbar spinal cord quit working and her aortoiliac pipes poured her blood into her belly. Lumbar lightning struck.
I searched for those six brass petals, but could not find them without a garden hose and a sieve or sluice box and pan to find those S&H gold nuggets.
I will make this my primary game bullet, at least until I can tell where the petals are going and whether it flips and exits tail first, in the interest of science.

Excellent Shooting RIP!!!
Any observations regarding internal damage similar or dis-similar to Max's Elk kill..??
17 November 2008, 06:42
RIPJay,
The tail end of the tenderloins got turned into mincemeat. Not much wasted.
I shot this doe in the south end.
Max shot the cow elk in the correct north end.
I cannot compare them except to say I recall there was a lot of blood in the north body cavity, just like there was in the south body cavity.
Maybe we can jog Max's memory for some recollections?
So far, your VeloHexploding bullet is more accurate on paper than the GSC HV.
That counts a lot with me.
Gerard mentioned need for some voodoo on the bullet diameters to improve .395 accuracy in .395 McGowen barrels.
It would be helpful if the
Zulu Authorities (ZA) would allow him to import a barrel for more precise measurement.
Hey! I have finally figured out what the "za" stands for in RSA email and web addresses.
Do you have any idea of the BC?
Whatever it is, it is good enough for 300 yards, I am sure.
Thanks for the great bullet.

17 November 2008, 06:53
MacifejIf memory serves it was a calculated BC of .348
The file went to Hard Drive heavan a while back. That won't happen again as we have a RAID set-up with external and thumb drive back ups.
Maybe I'll join you next season as I might be in the neighborhood. Any Turkey's to be had there in the Spring..?? (the feathered type)
17 November 2008, 07:03
RIPSome places the turkeys are thick, but they are rare in Nebo. They must not like underground coal mining. Undermined turkey nests!

RIPHog Killer,
Thanks.
The doe was a more difficult shot than the buck.
Sort of like all women versus men and life in general. And they live longer than us too!
Walter Deer got turned into sausage and jerky.
Doe deer is hanging around for choice cuts and burger. Yummy.
I would like to see what the VeloHexploder-Penetrator does to wild boar and bison, Texas Heart Shots included.

jwp475Congradulations, RIP

Gota love those Texas heart shots...

RIPWell, O.K.
Mountain grizzly and inland black bear only, where they cannot get their meat fishy.

Those bears fed on fish are not to my liking.
Greasy, fishy, red meat, bear meat: almost made me puke.

Serves ya right for eatin' a nice friendly (tourist chompin') bear...try some Saba Sashimi if you think that bear was rough eatin'...

Perfect description of Kodiak brown bear and Prince William Sound black bear.
No thanks on the raw fish stuffed with tape worms!
This is a more interesting concept to be tested on truly edible game and I can get some Bullet Test Tube to freeze the wound channel for inspection and catch the six brass fragments from the Hexploding nose:
Imagine what the Hexplosion would do to the onside lung on a chest shot.
The guaranteed retained weight of the rest of the bullet would penetrate the heart and lungs, could break bone, and exit on elk-sized game, as prof242 has proved.

Similar to a Walterhog.
The VeloHex could be called the S&H VH to distinguish it from the GSC HV.
There are more ways than one to skin a cat.

BTW,
Ed said he mailed the brass for your purposes on Monday or Tuesday this week. I will look for it tomorrow, and do some annealing of case necks, lubing, and try not to get it stuck in your dies.

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

prof242Sorry guys for not keeping up to date on things. My forum time (hell, all my time) is extremely limited these days.
RIP, you've got it right about Mac's bullet on my cow elk. There was a LOT of blood in the chest cavity and the lungs were shredded. Penetration...well, its a .395 mono-metal for goodness sake. It may still be penetrating for all I know. Its my standard bullet for use in the .395 Max here in Colorado.

As effective on Elk as a MRV-ed ICBM first strike.

prof242Since I was part of the first cruise missle base on European soil, I liked our t-shirts which showed the minarets of Moscow and one of our ground-launched cruise missles coming in. The legend on the shirt said, "GLCM rocks Moscow hit after hit." There was no way they could stop our missles after launch.!
