dogcatThe Land of Footprints by Stewart Edward White
I am chasing a little more of older African hunting history as told by writers rather than by "pure" hunters selling stories of their exploits.
I discovered this great book via Ludo Wurfbain (Safari Press). He sent me a list of recommended reading and collecting. I just "tossed a dart" at the list to start reading some new-to-me books. This is a good one. The story line is much like many safari turned adventure trek books, however White is a gifted writer with the ability to describe what he sees, smells and touches with an ability to get me into the trip. He hunted/travelled in the early 1900's with a couple of friends. He crossed paths with many of the more famous hunter/poachers. The bulk of his writing is about the "experience" of being out in wild lands and working with the native peoples. He talks about unusual characters he meets along the way, strange events with the African staff, his exploits hunting various animals. He hunted whatever came across his path and talked at length about what he felt as he hunting lion or buffalo or whatever.
I recommend this book not so much as a hunting book, but as a well written and descriptive essay about what the traveler/adventurer feels as he walks across the wilds of Africa.
The dogcat scale rates this an 8.5 out of 10 and I recommend you track this one down and read it.

MJinesA second on this selection. I made a post about this book awhile back. In the post I included a excerpt regarding buffalo hunting.
