Hemingways Guns
I saw a book at Safari Press called Hemingways guns. Has anybody read it and if so, can you give some feedback? I am specifically interested if the book has good, new, pictures and descriptions of the rifle/shotguns or if it relies on already published pictures and compilations of stories or mentions already published.

Thanks for your time!

Always a pleasure....... we've just relaunched a new and even more comprehensive version of the site (and hopefully, made it more user friendly) and it now has several thousand Africa and African hunting related titles from sellers worldwide..... plus a page or two of sheep hunting titles.

Prices go from about 50c to US$225K.

Glad you like the site. Smiler

The book is a signed first edition of Hemingway's first book entitled 'Three Stories and Ten Poems'

Hard to believe that any book can be worth that much but the seller obviously thinks so and I guess it'd be a better investment than giving it to Bernie Madoff. rotflmo

I bought 3 copies before they went to press.1 for me + 2 for Christmas presents.I did have higher expectations for the end result than what I received;but still not too bad.Personally I would read the Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber 7 times....again, than to reread Hemingway's Guns a second time.Only my opinion of course.

Read it over Xmas, a mate had it.

I'll buy it as it has a reference to the 505 Gibbs.

Good info and pics but not a world beater book.

YEs have obtained a copy and thought it was a good read but the quality could have been better. Pics were poor and some of the research was incomplete. Still worthy to have in the rack of all things Hemingway and guns...

Also I must confess that in the most morbid sense, that the question is somewhat answered as to the make + model of the 12 G. that took Papa's life ....+ what happened to her afterwards.

YEp. Interesting that in almost every other case it was said it was a Boss shotgun.

Just finished it. Not a bad read. Photos of the guns are lacking in detail. The pictures of Papa and friends are well presented. The authors seem to be trying to write for readers that have no knowledge of firearms as well as for those well versed. So if you are familiar with bolt rifles, double rifles, shotguns (pumps, and autos as well as doubles) the sections that explain the functions of the various guns tend to hurt the continuity. I found it worthwhile but not great.

Note to Baxter B.Making you feel better about the truth.History has never been pretty;but I want the TRUTH!If we cannot keep good records of every happenstance then our children + grandchildren will be the worse.Good books + ACCURATE + TRUTHFUL input from like minded individuals are always welcome.

Norman, did I say anything that wasn't true or in anyway supported a falsehood?

I still can't tell if you are directing your irritation at me or if I am misunderstanding your use of the pronoun 'you.' if directed at me please explain.

I agree on the importance of truth, I'm just trying to get at it.

Baxter,no offense was intended.I appologize if my 2 previous post were unclear to you.No irritation directed at you;however my use of the pronoun "you" was appropriate as this missive was a return correspondence with "you".It seems we got off to a bad initial meeting + I don't like that.I extend my formal appology for any offense you may have felt.Looking forward to intellectual discourse in the future.

Norman, no worries. I only brought up the Boss because it has been stated so long that it has become a truth and it is good to see that someone has gotten closer to thereal truth in regards to it

I am surprised that the guy who cut up the gun kept pieces and was OK with showing them to the authors. Clearly this is in contrast to the whole reason the gun was destroyed in the first place.

Cheers

I am truly surprised at no more response to this subject matter.Mox Nix.This should go to classified but we are in the bibliophile column so here goes:I am not selling any of my signed copies by Bill Jordan,Jeff Cooper, etc. I am in the market to sell Ist edition Arabian nights, all 17 volumes # XX in a series of only 1000 printed.New condition (considering 1887 was the printing date) Rice paper over the carvings/pics. If you've gone his far I don't need to explain. I alsohave several 1st edition of H. Rider Haggard ( in series). I do mnot post prices here as that is not applicaBLE on this site but would welcome correspondence from fellows of the word.
