JBrownBook reviews on books written by AR's own Scruffy
Many of you know Richard Powell as "Scruffy" here on AR. What you may not know is that Mr. Powell is the author of about a dozen hunting books.
I hesitate to call them hunting books as they are really more "tales of adventure" that involve hunting, fishing and a couple of hard hunting schnauzers.
I bought the first book
This Old Man is Going to Kill Us in preparation for a solo hunt in Cameroon. Richard devoted a large part of this book to his trip to Cameroon and these chapters went a long way towards preparing me for my hunt. I read the rest of the book and was taken in by the style of Richard's writing.
Before long I ordered a second book from Richard,
Rode Hard and Put Away Wet and upon reading it I was equally impressed.
Aside from his amazing ability as a writer(I've never seen any writer who was able to "write between the lines" as clearly as Mr. Powell) Richard is an amazing person. It goes without saying that he is a hunting fool but he could also be described as a high school teacher, a bison magnate, a terrible fisherman, a self-guided hunter of Africa's dangerous game, a keen upland bird hunter, a waterfowl enthusiast, an aspiring ladies man, a Canuck with red-blooded American Liberty running through his veins, and doting husband.
These books are easy to read and will leave you with a smile. If you have a long plane ride these books might just be your best friend.

I'd PM Scruffy. I got my copies straight from the horse's, ... uh mouth. Yeah that's it.
All jokes aside, he's a good guy and would get a kick out of you getting in touch with him.
Dean
Certainly no copies of the first book available on line , or even an on-line referance to it .
