Anybody read his books or books about him? Best recommendation?

I recommend "King Of The Wa-Kikuyu". Safari press might have it but my copy is from Alexander books ISBN 1-57090-126-0. This is written by John Boyes BTW;Capstick writes about him as well but one should read his autobiography.
