Help!! Facts on an old Ph wanted!
Can anybody of you guys with big africana-collections help me with a little problem?! I´m collecting facts on Kris Aschan, former member of EAPHA, worked for Ker & Downey. EVERYTHIING is of interest. Is he mentioned in some books, articles, interviews or so?

Sealhunter:

I've found only one reference to Kris Aschan, and it is in "Men For All Seasons, The Hunters and Pioneers," by Tony Dyer. Trophy Room Books, Box 3041, Aougura CA 91301 -- (818) 889-2469 -- published it in 1996. I don't know the price, but I suppose it was $100-$125. I don't know if it still is in print.

Here's what it said:

"ASCHAN, KRIS, Full-member EAPHA 1948. He came to Kenya as an assistant to the legendary Baron von Blixen in 1926. Joined Ker & Downey in 1947. Died in Nairobi in August 1984. His son "Ulf" continues in the safari business in Kenya."

There is a photo of Aschan, along with his signature.

He may be mentioned elsewhere in the Dyer book, but didn't see it in a quick scan of the pages and it's been a long time since I read it cover to cover.

Hope the above helps helps.

Thank you Bill! That´s a good start. I´ve actually been looking into buying some of Dyers books but haven´t decided where to start. With my interest in East african hunting history, would you recommend "Men for all seasons" or "The East African hunters" or some of his other books?

I recommend any of Dyers books. "Men For All Seasons" is especially good for anyone interested in East Africa's hunting history. I may have a copy of "The East African Hunters" somewhere but I was unable to find it yesterday. (I have too @#$% many books!)

Sealhunter:

You may want to contact Ellen Enzler-Herring, publisher of Trophy Room Books, Box 3041, Aougura CA 91301 -- (818) 889-2469 -- for information about East African hunting material.

Ellen is very knowledgeable about all of the books in this field, and may be able to recommend some important works you might overlook. (Please tell her I sent you.) By all means get her publishing company's "Men of All Seasons."

You might like to speak to Ken Stewart of Stewart Bullets in RSA. - Ken was a member of the EAPHA and also one of the early game capturers and could possibly help you. - You can call him on +27152899401 or +27822986779. He doesn't have fax or e-mail I'm afraid.....

Ashan is mentioned in Capstick's A MAN CALLED LION. Something about the lack of penetration of a .577 I think on a safari with F. P. Williamson way back when in Kenya. It is in the appendix somewhere.
