A very interesting book written by Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas of his outdoor adventures in the Cascade mountains.

I'm pretty sure this is the one that describes rendering a sheep to get enough lubricant for a car to get out of the mountains and back to town. Great accounts of what used to be pretty remote country. And to think he became a lawyer!!!
