DandyofpunjabA few good books
Hello everyone
I picked up a book called "Maneaters and Memories" by J.E. Carrington Turner. It was recently republished and I noticed that the publishers were based in Dehradun which is a town mentioned in some of Jim Corbett’s books and was the headquarters of most of the hunting expeditions in Northern India. I called the publishers to ask about other books and they sent me a list of the following books with prices and the approximate cost of international air mail.
Two Books (1 Packet) $25 USD
Four Books(2 Packets) $35 USD
Six Books (3 Packets) $50 USD
Eight Books (3 Packets) $60 USD
Ten Books (4 Packets) $70 USD
Fifteen Books (5 Packets) $100 USD

The Maneaters of Tsavo
Lt. Col. J.H. Patterson , D.S.O
First published in 1907, this book is considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time. A first-hand account of the infamous Tsavo lions, this book records the harrowing true story of what really happened at Tsavo in 1898. One of the first works on the subject of man-eating lions by someone with first-hand experience; it details a series of attacks on the Indian workers building the Mombassa to Uganda railway in 1898-1899. It was Patterson’s task to rid the project of some man-eaters who had decimated the missing, but the discovery of the bodies soon dispelled that notion. Over the next few months, the lions had their pick of the workers along the railway line, and various traps and vigils all failed to work, until one of the lions was shot by Patterson, who had waited all night at the top of a 12 feet-high structure of sticks for the opportunity. The second male was shot soon after, but between them these two lions had accounted for over 100 workers and natives, “of whom no official record was kept.” If you are interested in the Tsavo Man-Eaters, this book is a must read!

This delightful book has been authored by eminent naturalist and sportsman, R. Lydekker. A bible on the study of wild animals in India and the neighbouring countries, this book is indispensable to the study of natural history in South Asia.
Lydekker’s writing is enthused by a deep fascination and interest for and in wildlife and related literature as his sightings are interspersed with lively snippets of information either from other popular texts of his time, through anecdotes or from personal experience. The book follows a remarkable and commendable accuracy on detailing information on several species, their history, distribution and habitat

Jungle By-Ways in India
E.P. Stebbing
This book is well worth browsing for the delightful wildlife sketches alone; plus the humorous depictions of Indian life a hundred year ago, which make the written words, come vividly alive. Add to these, the author’s observant, knowledgeable eye and dry sense of the ridiculous, which make the old days of the Raj immediate – as though it happened only yesterday.
Reading these stories, essential for all nature lovers, is an enchanting way of learning nineteenth century history – much more fun than all those dreadful kings, battles and dates! Modern day wildlife management has much to gain from these essays. This book provides that unique experience for the professional and the amateur.
