WinkBartle Bull
I just bought "Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure" on amazon, by Bartle Bull. Is this a good book? I haven't seen it for sale in too many catalogs and know nothing about the author.

GreybeardBushmanI have a copy I got from Amazon. I'd rate it about 7/10. Worth the money, in my opinion.

dogcatI have two of his books that are unread at the moment. The first is Cafe on the Nile, which I am reading - it is ok but not spectacular. I have "Safari-A chronicle of Adventure" and will read it.

billrquimbyIt's a beautiful book. However, Bartle Bull seems to believe "real" hunting in Africa ended when Kenya closed.

Bill/OregonWink: I found it to be a very good outline of the history of safari. He wrote an especially nice chapter on Selous. I don't much care about African hunting after World War I, so haven't much of an opinion on the last portion of the book. Bull was at one time publisher of The Village Voice. I value my copy.

dogcatI just finished Cafe on the Nile - it is a very average book. He wrote the first half reasonably and developed his characters well, but ended abruptly, killed off nearly everyone and did not have the characters follow how they were developed. It is worth $10 on ebay, and takes about 4 hours to read. If you have a good Agatha Christie novel, you will likely be better off reading it.
I will sell my copy to anyone for $10 shipped.

dogcatWink,
I just finished - Safari - A Chronicle of Adventure.
This is one of the best safari books I have read as it covers a great deal of history and the "characters" that shaped the business. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend this one.
