2 3/4" vs. 3" slugs
Is their any advantage in using 3" over 2 3/4" slugs?

You can give your friends a good laughf when you fall on your as from the recoil.

Just kidding. Don't like using to much gun when hunting with a shot gun do. I like my 12/70.

I don't think you can make a shotgun a long range gun by using more shot and at normal range, normal shells gives me more than enoff.

Still if you like the boooom. Go ahead.

Some of the latest loads (Remington) have remarkably high velocities. At under 100 yards, the answer would be "not as far as I'm concerned."

I've had good luck with the Winchester/BRI 2-3/4" loads.

I shoot a maverick bolt action, which is an unrifled version of the Mossberg 695. Out of my gun, I cannot hold any kind of a group with 3" mags. They do kick quit a bit more as well. Don't seem to work for me, but you could certainly try them out for yourself.

A couple of years ago, I bought a bunch of different slugs and chronographed them just for fun. Federal classics were the most consistent ones I found, they all clocked in the neighborhod of 1500-1550fps. They are the ones that seem to shoot the best from my gun. Try a bunch of different ones, and see what works best for you. Hey, it's an excuse to go shoot [Big Grin]

I use the 3" Inch sluggers in my 870 and the only difference I can tell in the 3" and the 2 3/4" is that the 3" has a bigger boom and a hell of a lot more recoil. and If you shoot them At dawn when there isnt much light you will see the huge muzzle blast. Have fun ! [Cool]

I haven't tried 2 3/4" slugs in my 870, but I have to believe there is something in this world more pleasant than the 3" slugs.

The sights on my shotgun limit my shots to 100 yards or less. I can shoot a decent group at longer range, but I cannot get a decent sight picture on a deer.

I suppose I should put better sights on my shotgun or try those 2 3/4" slugs for my current setup. I'm sure the 2 3/4" slugs are plenty harmful to deer at 100 yards.
