Tell me about shotgun shells ..
Im trying to figure what different drams are available for 12 and 20ga shells, and what dram refers to max loads? Thanks.

Scott,

Good Luck! I hate those confusing things.

From Lyman's 4th. (lead shot only), the highest 12 ga. listed is 4 1/2 drams. With a 1 1/8 ounce payload this should give 1475 fps. The highest 20 ga dram equiv. listed is 3 1/4. With 7/8 oz of shot this should be a 1320 fps load. Of course less shot more velocity; more shot lower velocity.

The highest factory loads listed are 4 dram in 12 ga. and 2 3/4 dram in the 20. However, remember that Lyman's 4th. was published in 1995.

here is good link for Drams Equivalent.
It a velocity/charge weight ratio.

That is PERFECT. Thanks vary much, i printed it up and will treasure it for life now. Im trying to figure what loads to buy to trying shooting in my 20 ga semi, but i dont want to get the lightest loads to avoid jamming, and also i dont want to have to spend $10 a box for heavier loads to try. Thanks again, Scott

Scott,

Even my Dad's old Winchester 1400 would take anything you fed it. Just buy something in your price range...
