Beretta UGB?
There was one for sale in the classifieds. I am not familiar with them. It sounds rather weird to have a break open semi automatic. What problem was it designed to solve? I understand that they absorb recoil very well, but several semi autos have a reputation for doing that. Was this a European thing?

Peter, some places, like Griffin & Howe's Hudson Farms, require that shooters use a break-open firearm...for safety reasons. The UGB satisfies that requirement for shooters who prefer the feel of a single-barrel shotgun.
