I have a 28in. rifled slug barrel for my encore
and was wondering if anyone out there was using one ? What shoots the best for you ?

I really like my 870 w/cantilever barrel despite my concerns about the possible change of impact when changing barrels. I switch back and forth with my son's youth 870 and there was a question about such, though my research is inconclusive. I did cut up a coke can and put a shim where the barrel enters the receiver, it's tight now.

I will eventually spend the money for one of the boutique barrels and have that pinned to the receiver once my son is old enough to have his own (or use my) scattergun. Hastings is one I am speaking of, so if you buy a used 870 bird gun just buy one of those barrels, scope it and go. I had a 155 yd kill with mine a couple of years ago, though most shots aren't across a field like that one was.

I love the winchester platinum or hornady sst.

2 3/4 not 3". I want as far away from 12 ga slug recoil as I can get.

i too have a 20 gauge encore. i called tc and they told me that the federal expander slugs were the most consistant performers in their barrels. i tried them and they shoot good in my barrel. i also tried the remington green tips and they shoot real good, like a ragged hole at 100 yards for three shots. i haven't had the time to try them at any longer difference.

I tried the hornady sst today, it didnt like them very well ,about 4-5 in, @ 100 yards.

i have tried hornady sst slugs in several guns. i find them to be very erratic depending on the lot number of the particular ammunition. the 4-5 inch group is about average for them in my testing. i even bought a barrel with a different twist that works better with other slugs but didn't have any real effect with the consistency of hornady slugs

Well I tried the winchester 3" platnums last week at the range,they shot very well, inside 2" at 100 yrds. I also had a chance to put them to the test Sat in Ohio on a nice buck at 90 yrds. He field dressed at 150 lbs and will score almost 135".I am very pleased with there performance ,I hit him just behind the shoulder and he went about 40yrds. !!!!
