Kyler HamannI had a bout of trap... but I'm feeling much better now.
Actually I'm in a trap league this fall, normally shoot a couple a year. And I've even been known to join the ATA if there was a good money shoot around, but I'd sure rather shoot sporting, 5-Stand, FITASC or even skeet.
No special gun since my goal in shooting trap is to work on my concentration and raise my percentage on trap type birds for my sporting game. I win my fair share of local tournaments and leagues shooting a lowly sporting gun.
What are you shooting?
18 November 2009, 00:28
CollinsI shoot "play" trap in my backyard... stations, oscillating electric trap... but just for fun. I'll never have time to shoot at a range. Why do you ask?
18 November 2009, 18:37
GanyanaHave a pretty decent olypic trap gun...but I now shoot ATA with the 28g barrels on my double (rifle) for practice

Gerrypeters375I have shot 16 yard trap regularly in a misguided period of my life. So, as Collins inquires, why do you ask? I think he and I are eager to inform you about the frustrations and annoyances of trap.

(it's also a truly fun way to shoot a shotgun)

Very true statement about trap shooting!
I shot competetive trap in America for two years. First year I had a 99% average on singles.
Second year I had a 99.5% average!
That got me thinking, why the hell did I miss those few targets?
I was day dreaming at the time probably.

I always find it truly annoying when I read of someone who doesn't miss at trap.(I always need a reason to miss)

It tells me that you are 'reading the machine". I bet you always took the #5 station -just so you could "read". I'm glad you liked trap. I did too. (Ever hear the wisecrack - "Skeet looks hard -and is easy. Trap looks easy -and is hard?)
24 November 2009, 19:33
SaeedI never even tried reading the trap machines. I shoot the birds as they come out, sometimes I leave them until just before they hit the ground.
I use an extra full choke on singles shotgun.
Skeet is much easier than trap. In fact eventually I only shot skeet with a 410 for fun.
I even tried shooting from stations 1 and 7 using shot from a 22 rim fire. Most of the time the small pellets did not break the targets, despite hitting them.

DLSI used to shoot a fair bit of trap when I was younger. As a junior shooter, I had one year when I shot about 8,000 registered PITA and ATA targets. I never was good enough, so I finally gave it up. The final time I ever shot registered birds, I shot a 98 in singles (missed the 1st and last birds, literally), then shot a 97 in handicap and a 46 in doubles (25 pair) and I did not win a single event, nor high overall. Right then and there, I walked away.
Saeed, how long ago did you shoot trap over here? I remember hearing your name way back when, and guys used to say you were an incredible trap shooter. I can remember a few of them bitching about being beaten by you.

BuliwyfI love trap. Any recommendations on the best trap shooting instruction books?

Bob SmalserI'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned that American Trap remains popular because it's the Everyman's Money Game behind live pigeons.
Or does no one here play the options?

Gerrypeters375Saeed:
I knew a 16 year old kid who shot 100 regularly at trap with a 410. Us older types on the squad discussed how to get rid of him.

(BTW, unlike you he never followed the bird but broke them right as soon as they came up above the trap house. Aren't you ashamed with your 12 that you were following the birds so far?)

DB BillI don't usuall say this but --- Gerry you're full of it.
If you would have said "he broke 25x25 once" I might have believed it.
If you would said "he broke 100x100 once" I wouldn't have believed it but I wouldn't have said anything but
when you say he broke 100x100 regulary you insult the intelligence of everyone who ever used a shotgun.
I'm willing to fly to New York to witness this wonderkid shoot if I can get some betting action. What do you say we take a week-end and let the kid shoot 4 or 5 events of 100x100 and bet on the results.

Jim WhiteDB BILL, I got a better idea. Lets put him in a 500 target race and see how he does. I've shot a whole bunch of them with a BT-99 and a TM-1 and the best I have ever done is 497.
Several 100 straights with a .410.....BULLSHIT
And thats from a former California state singles champion.

Kyler HamannBragging and exaggerating like Gerry's keeps it interesting around the clubs. One high school kid at our club, after shooting just a handful of practice days, told me that he normally averages 97 or 98 per 100. I doubt that he's shot more than a couple hundred birds ever. I never saw him break more than 20 or 21/25 on trap or skeet (really not that bad for a beginner). He worked at a local gunshop and thought he was God's gift to teach the rest of us about guns and shooting. It was hilarious. One day he showed up with his new Mossberg to show off to everyone. He was searching for compliments so I indulged him as we waited for our round of skeet. During our discussion my (unloaded) K-80 was resting on my foot. As we visited about his knowledge and prowess in the gun world he said, "What brand of gun are you shooting?" I said, "Krieghoff." He quite literally turned up his nose an said, "Never heard of it!" as he turned to walk away. That's been one of my favorite jokes with my son (who has to go to school with him) ever since.

Saeed, I have the same problem at times with a 12 gauge. At least that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Yep. Sometimes them birds can just keep flying.....even with their hearts shot out with a 12.

I got into trapshooting a few years back. Shooting a 30" Winchester Select Energy Sporting. I'm no good at it. But I sure have a lot of fun.

I have another example of "bragging". We used to have adult weekend guests whwn I was very young and they fished in our trout brook. They had very expensive fly rods and dry lures (the brook had native brook trout). My cousins and I caught quite large brookies (big enough to eat) using handmade rods and lines and lures (breadballs or worms)It really annoyed some people!

buckeyeshooterI shoot trap once a week weather permitting. I have a remington 11-87 priemier trap from the custom shop and an old winchester model 12 trap both guns in 12 ga.

That's how we miss'em!
I too have shot skeet from #s 1 & 7 with a smoothbore .22.... have a few of the Remington 121s fitted with the "Routledge" barrels and these can break targets from those stations on a fairly consistent basis (if you are really fast on the outgoing targets).
My trap gun: Krieghoff K-80 Trap Special.
