I'd probably be using #2 steel shot and reasonably close range
What's the advice on this?

465H&HYou shouldn't have any problems. I have used Federal 3" Steel #3s for years over decoys and they kill very well, at least as well if not better than my hunting partner's 12 gauge. I used an over and under with IC annd Mod chokes. These were the very large Great Basin Canadas.

DoublessVapo, as you know, wingshooting is all about distances. If the birds are in range, you will have no trouble at all. I shot full Canadas in Wisconsin with 2-3/4" Federals out of a 16...

collectorDecoying Snow Geese....you should be ok with 20Ga - Steel #2 (or #4) with IC Choke. Here are some pics of Greater Snow Geese we hunt on the Maryland Eastern Shore late in the season. You can shoot them in the head with a .410 steel #6 this close
Now pass shooting Snow Geese is a totally different ball game and of course 20 gauge would not be the best gauge for such an activity. But decoying birds should be just fine with the 20 gauge.
A friend of mine used to hunt with these retired game wardens, they would hunt Canada Geese with .410 over/under ... decoying birds ... they were all great shots and used to shoot the Canada Geese in the head/neck. Now that is some serious waterfowling

tiggertateI'm not a waterfowl hunter; what is the benefit of a 3" 20 ga? Does it kick less than a heavy 2-3/4" 12 ga? Or is that just a particular gun you prefer for personal reasons?

RonE3" 20 ga allows more shot, better velocity or more shot at the same velocity. 3" chambers in a 20 ga gun give you more versatility. 20 ga guns are generally lighter than 12 ga guns and thus easier to carry for long periods. Shooting dove, quail and other such game with 2 3/4" shells is often quite satisfactory, for heaver and harder to kill game, stepping up to 3" seems to work a little better.
Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

N E 450 No2I have never been a fan of steel shot. I will also say I am not a big waterfoul hunter, but I have shot some geese and some ducks.
Many times I have said, you could not commit suicide in a phone booth, with steel shot...
I just do not like it...
However, I can say I have found Bismuth shot to kill great.
I have killed several ducks with 12 ga 2 3/4", and 20ga 3" Bismuth. It seems to work as good as the lead shot I used "back in the day".
