Assuming that you have removed the slide from the action, look @ the front end.

You will see a metal ring with grooves in it .

I took an old 1/2" drive socket that was slightly smaller than the I.D. of the fore-end wood and ground a "spanner" on the flat base of the socket to engage the grooves. The drive extention is used "bass ackwards". That is, it is inserted into the socket from the socket end.

Clamp the action bar in a padded vice, grasp the wooden fore-end firmly to avoid twisting the action bar aand unscrew the ring. It has right hand threads.

BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TWIST THE ACTION BAR!

thanks for the very good info, kinda thought i might have to build a spanner wrench. the previous owner varnished it with every thing together so i will have that to contend with.
