10 ga slugs
Anyone use 10 ga slugs? I am thinking of buying a 10ga and use it as a slug gun. Any suggestions as to what company I should buy slugs from and also what shotguns would you all recommend?
Thanks,
Texican

I have not seen any other 10 ga. slugs than Federal 1 3/4 ounce. These are the standard style slug and probably would shoot best out of an IC or Mod. choke. They would hit with a tremendous punch.

I can understand the mentallity of bigger is better but, I was comparing ballistics on the Federal 10 Gauge slug & some 12 Gauge slugs and I found out it aint worth the extra money your gonna pay for a 10 gauge gun.

10 Ga. Slug Ballistics:

Velocity in Feet Per Second
(To Nearest 10 FPS)
Energy in Foot Pounds
(To Nearest 5 Foot-Pounds)

Velocity:
Muzzle 25 Yds 50 Yds 75 Yds 100 Yds
1280 1160 1080 1020 970

Energy:
Muzzle 25 Yds 50 Yds 75 Yds 100 Yds
2785 2295 1980 1775 1605

12 Ga. Slug Ballistics:

Remington Buckhammer

Velocity:
Muzzle 50 yds 100yds
1550 1320 1145

Energy:
Muzzle 50 yds 100yds
2935 2177 1600

And if you have a Rifled Barrel on the 12 Gauge you can use the Core-Lokt Sabots where the energy stays above 2000 ft lbs at 100 yds.

[Eek!]

It is just one of those things that I don't need but I want. The 12 ga slug gun would be the sensible choice but I want to be the kid on the block with the unusual toy. [Big Grin]

If you do decide to get one you should go with a Rem. SP-10 its a Semi auto so it will help with recoil

I shoot a 10 gauge for turkey and geese and have wondered about a slug gun as well. In fact I reload for the 10. I shot last spring's tom with my reloads along with some steel shells which are awsome compared to the limited selection you can buy for it. The steel reloads can reach above 1600 fps from the 10 gauge. I always wanted to load some slugs, but never looked into it much.

Used a BPS-10 with Federal slug's to take two feral-pig's while in South Carolina!
Did it so I could say I did!
They hit with dramatic result's!
But the downside is the lack of range and cost of ammo, compared to 12gauge slug loads!

I had a 10ga NEF that shot pretty good with federals. It was a single shot but man it was great. I liked that gun alot. But I got tired of having to order all my ammo so I sold it. My buddy killed a spike buck with it. It left a huge hole from what he said. He hit it far back in the ribs and it dropped the buck on the spot.

As soon as I find another cylinder bore screw in choke, I'm going to make a mould for 10 ga slugs. (I have a double that will make a poor-man's double rifle.)
