Browning BT-99. Is it a good trap gun?
I'm thinking about getting a Browning BT-99. Does it have a good reputation? Are the chokes they provide good?

The BT99 is a "good" trap gun for the money- my problem is I don't "fit" the BT99 in factory form. My oldest son picked mine up shot 25 straight- said "thanks Dad" and likes it to this day. The ideal is if you can shoot before you buy.

If u really get into trap, u may want to shoot doubles later on. Cant do that with a single barrel. The 99 i shot, i did not like, it did not fit. The adjustable comb model would have been a better choice. If u buy a double barrel trap model,u can also shoot skeet with it by just changing the chokes. At one time the trap and skeet model citori had the same stock measurements.

The BT-99 is an excellent gun to start out with. I started out with one that a buddy gave to me that had about a billion rounds through it. I put many thousands more through it and shot my way to the 27 yard line and a California state singles championship with it in 1984. Thats when I decided I was hot shit and had to have a Perazzi. I'm glad I have owned Perazzi's but it all started with a BT-99 and you know what I shoot today now that I just shoot for fun? Yeah buddy I'm right back to square one and grinding targets with a BT-99. There are way better trap guns around but for the money a BT-99 is a solid value. Jim

I haven't shot trap for quite a while- 1985, but I doubt the targets are any different than they were then. I shot a BT99 with a modified barrel on 16's about as well as anything. At the time I managed a gun store with a trap range, always had some used Perazzis etc, I can break more targets with a BT99 or a Remington 1100. A lot of trapshooters (and other shooters as well) get caught up in the idea that if it costs more it will work better- not always. I never shot trap with an O/U that I liked, also rarely shot doubles mostly because I hated to wait around and shoot them after 16's and handicaps were over. Actually in my later years, I shot nothing but handicap targets and my handicap average went up to 92 and made it to the long yardage group.
