I'm not sure I completely understand your question. Is the extended magazine for a Rem 870? I've had a few and put a few on for friends etc and it's pretty straightforward (just did one last week). I do know some of the later guns(last 5-10 yrs or so) have a crimp/cover that holds the original spring / follower in when the cap is unscrewed. Not sure why they did that unless it was to discourage adding a longer tube.

The crimp is easy enough to remove but that doesn't sound like it's the problem you're having, or is it?

Are you saying that the end of the new extended tube has a male fitting? If it does it must not be for a Remington 870 unless it's some universal setup I'm not failiar with. Two male threads would obviously need a F-F coupler but that would be a new one for me (but then there are a lot of things I've never seen so take this with a grain of salt.)

If you want to post some more specifics, I'll be glad to offer what I do know to see if we can get you running. I'll check the board for a few days to see if you still need a hand or if you have it figured out.

Good Luck,

I have to agree with you on that one, I have never seen a rem 870 with a male threaded extension tube. Mine is fitted with a TacStar 7+1 tube, and it (the extension) comes all in one piece(female threaded) except the extended spring.
...However! there are two dents in the original magtube, wich are ment to guide the plastic springholder(wich in turn is ment to hold the spring down when you unscrew the magtube nut, so that the spring doesnt shoot away when the magtube is dismounted) You have to take away those two dents if you are fitting an extended magtube (otherwise the cartridge follower wont go all the way up into the mag extension). Just take a drill big enough to take away all of the dents and be sure to file the inside of the holes so that rounds and spring doesnt snag the edges of the holes.
...As for the extension with a male thread... toss it and buy a good one, itll save you a lot of time and trouble and the gun will function better!
