Iowa state law says in part;

quote:
724.1 Offensive weapons.
An offensive weapon is any device or instrumentality of the following types:
8. Any mechanical device specifically constructed and designed so that when attached to a firearm silences, muffles, or suppresses the sound when fired…..
724.2 Authority to possess offensive weapons.
Any of the following is authorized to possess an offensive weapon when the person's duties or lawful activities require or permit such possession:
1. Any peace officer.
2. Any member of the armed forces of the United States or of the national guard.
3. Any person in the service of the United States.
4. A correctional officer, serving in an institution under the authority of the Iowa department of corrections.
5. Any person who under the laws of this state and the United States, is lawfully engaged in the business of supplying those authorized to possess such devices.
6. Any person, firm or corporation who under the laws of this state and the United States is lawfully engaged in the improvement, invention or manufacture of firearms.

A private individual can not own a silencer in Iowa. About the only way for you to own a silencer is to obtain a federal firearms license ($200/3 years) and pay the Special Occupational Tax ($500/year). Manufacturers also have to pay the yearly ITAR of $2250. While federal law allows you to keep silencers and other title 2 weapons (except machine guns made after May 1986) after going out of business it appears that Iowa law will not. So you would have to keep the license in force to keep any silencers you make or buy. There are only about a dozen gun friendly states in the USA, and Iowa is not one of them.

I may be wrong, but I do not think the ATF will approve any request (on an ATF form 1 or 4) for any person in the military to make or own a silencer for personal use. Iowa law just makes an exception to possession for those in the military.

There are only about a dozen states that do not make possession of some kind of gun a crime. If you are still young, then I suggest that you leave Iowa and head for greener pastures.

I am 12 years from retirement and have a cushy job with decent pay. I am stuck in WA where I have been trying to get the WA ban on silencer use overturned. No luck for the last three years though.

Well, at least Iowa finally got around to shall-issue CCW. But I'd bet it'll be a while, if ever, that suppressors get allowed especially with your Gov. "Chet" and other knotheads in the state legislature. I left Iowa 20+ yrs ago and was hoping that Iowa allowed suppressors so I could take mine up there for a visit with the folks but saw that they didn't trust the law abiding folks of Iowa to own one. shame
