45 colt ammo
i have several 45 colt rounds that are old RNFP lead (projectiles in terrible shape) and the headstamp says 45 colt and PETERS. the primers look rounded and brass colored. anyway to determine age?

Maybe if you added pictures someone could give a guess. Peters ammunition was made for decades and from what I have seen, what dating schemes were are, are based on the ammunition boxes. Which are found in period advertisements.

I do not recommend firing old ammunition. If you have vintage smokeless ammunition at least pull a bullet, dump the powder, and look for evidence of deterioration.

Such what as this smart guy did. He had 1973 vintage ammunition and pulled some bullets.

Powder breaking do Powder breaking down

What he found is deteriorated gunpowder that could have blown up his rifle. Or at least, the nitrogen dioxide, which converts to acid gas in the presence of water, was eating holes in his cases, so the brass could have failed.

This is recent. 20 to 21 year old ammunition and the powder has deteriorated to the point it has ruined the brass

I used photobucket for a decade and then photobucket changed its business model and stopped hosting for free.

So I walked to IMGUR. https://imgur.com/ which also has funny pictures to see. Set up a free account, make the posts hidden, and you can post pictures.

What are you going to do with the 38 S+W rounds? I bought my son a lend-lease S+W in that cal. a few years ago for Christmas. I load for it but one can never have too much ammo. Big Grin

I found a few fired 45 special cases !? I once traided 8000 45 colt cases for a pool table.
