Short 8mm catridges?
As I sit here awaiting my new stick of cerosafe from Brownells, I wonder what short 8mm cartridges there were? I'm aware of the 8x51 and the 8,15x46R.

I recently acquired a swedish 96 mauser that wears an 8mm barrel (.313" lands, .323" grooves) but has a rather short case body. Trying to do a little prep work so that once I get the chamber cast I'll know what I have. The 8.15x46R seems unlikely but then again, the rim diameter is just a hair over what the 6.5x55's is.

There was a slip of paper under the buttstock with 8x45 on it but I've never heard of such an animal.

Your help is appreciated.

There was the 8x54 Krag-Jorgensen, based on the 6.5x55 necked up to 8mm.

8 x 50R and 8 x 56R Hungarian - .329" bullets.

Thanks, but let me be more specific. Any cartridges besides the two I mentioned with rims between roughly .473" and .486"? The boltface is unaltered and the 8.15X46r according to specs would most likely fit.

My calibrated eyeball says that 54mm is too long.

The 8x56R would fit a Siamese nicely but not a Swede.

There's the old 32 Remington and there is 30 Remington brass available now and then, here and there. I'd say the 32 Special, but the rim diameter is .506

Once you get your chamber cast just take the most closely matching cartridge and use it by necking up or down.

8mm Kurz?
It would be odd to find a bolt gun chambered in this, but it's certanly possible.

No, the Kurz is too short. I'm all but convinced it's an 8x51. The chamber cast will tell. I'm just not sure I want to go through the effort to feed the bloody thing. The dies are a mint.

Basically what is the 8x51? Am I off thinking it's a 308 necked up to 8mm?

Brass can be formed from a .308 but the 8x51 has more taper, shoulder isn't as wide. Pre-dates the 7.62x51 by about 60 years or more.

If dies weren't so dang expensive I might have to keep it. It would be dandy with 170 grain round noses.

Couple ideas to run by you. How close would a 8x57 mauser be to the 8x51 if you lathed off an approapiate amount of the bottom? Another would be to run a 308 chamber reamer in the existing chamber (this only after you get your chamber cast and compare it with a 308 chamber) and then open up the neck portion on a 308 sizer die & seater die to 8mm. Might check a 7.65 Argentine sizer die dimensions as opposed to the 8x57 one, it has more taper and the whole case is only 53 to 54 mm's long.

Has anyone ever built an 8mm x 39 wildcat, based on necking the 7.62 x 39 up to 8mm?

I need to learn to read better. That's exactly what i have. I stopped reading as soon as you said krag. I automatically thought of the .30-40.

Glad to hear you know what you've got. The round is rarely encountered outside the Scandinavian countries. Another rarley seen is the 8x58R Danish Krag military round.
