I'm not taking my house off grid but I am not having all of my electricity supplied by a powerline either.

I have seen solar panels installed to charge a bank of batteries.

These in turn have an inverter, which ups the voltage and change to ac.

Works very well, as long as the limitation of the solar panels, weather conditions and out put are reasonable.
