Dehradun/ Bahraich:
A tiger killed a 45-year-old man in Sunderkhal village near the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand where a girl was devoured by a leopard in Ron village in Almora district.
Both these incidents happened on Thursday in the hill state, the forest officials said. An eight-year-old leopard was also found dead in a stream near Kimari-Bhirtali road in Uttarakhand on Thursday, they said.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, a woman, aged 25, was killed by a tiger in Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. The wild cat, who was dragging the woman towards the forest, fled leaving the body when villagers working in fields raised an alaram, Divisional Forest Officer R K Singh said.
In the same district, two leopards were killed by the villagers soon after the big cats attacked three persons in Anandnagar Badkhariya area in Katarniaghat sanctuary. A husband, his wife and a boy were attacked by the two leopards while they were working in the field on Friday afternoon, Singh said. Their screams attracted the villagers who killed the two animals, he said. The three, injured in the attack, were admitted to a hospital.

NakihunterI have just returned from a 6 week business trip to India. I traveled around the cities - Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai & some provinces. I was surprised to read about frequent human encounters with leopards, sloth bears and elephants. I am not sure if this is a case of improved reporting, increased population pressure on wildlife, increased animal numbers or a bit of every thing.
Hunting is certainly closed for good. A bit of illegal shooting goes on mostly for wild boar and crop raiding antelope / deer.
Recently my brother along with some friends saw a tiger at a distance of 25 meters and stopped to video it. It moved away and started roaring. I'll try & paste a link of this clip.
Good to be back on AR!

reddy375Wow the tigers from Almora have not lost their dastardly man eating ways! For those of us who grew up reading the tales of Jim Corbert it brings back memories of our childhood. The hot summer holidays spent with air rifle in hand and nothing that moved was safe! Come to think of it, we ate most of the birds we shot except the hawks! As we grew up the long cycle rides further afield with a single shot BSA .22 looking for the odd duck in a village tank (every Indian village has one) and later shooting snipe in the rice fields with handloaded black powder cartridges and a sneaked shotgun! The time when on a sneaked trip from school when a lantana bush exploded infront of me when I disturbed two huge wildboar sleeping in the midday heat.....later on would come the Teak jungles and bigger adventures, but these were my formative years helped along by the Maneaters of Kumaon!

NakihunterOh...Arjun now you have started it all over again. I just got back from a 6 weeks business trip in India but no forest or wildlife trips.
Yes I too remember the days of using a .22 air rifle & shooting squirrels in the big banyan trees - sometimes even on the run. Chasing jungle fowl in thick bush among the cardamom plantations & fringes of lantan was always a great experience. Who can forget the black powder shotshell reloading and crawling on my belly in the swamps to ambush teals....
Not hunting tigers....but all the same it was hunting in India!

coniferMeat is wandering everywhere. Scads of "domestic" pigs in big family groups wander the streets of Dehra Dun and other towns. Monkeys (BIG) are everywhere. Pathetically ill dogs stagger all over every town. Fish fill the rivers (clean rivers up north are recommended). But.....India is an open sewer, filled with starving people.

"this person" spent much time in India, sent by the United Nations and the U.S. gov't. Possibly, "skeetshot" lives a life in India that comfortably obscures his vision.
