Hunting in Japan
Gidday Guys,

A chap in Japan has started a petition to allow foreigners to hunt in Japan.

If you would like to hunt Sika in their natural environment sign up and help out the hunters

I believe Eric used to frequent the forum. I always told him as soon as I can legally go, I am there. Those Hokiado sika are amazing.
Would be a really cool trip.. sightsee Tokyo for a day or 2, climb Fuji-san, then head north to deer hunt. I like the idea! Big Grin

Sorry to be a spoil sport

I just got off the phone with my friends who shoots for japan

He feels from what he knows there is no way they will allow mass influx of foreign hunters with their own rifle or ammo

Different prefectures have different attitude to foreign hunters and to get a parliament act to pass with take 2 readings so mim 2 years

Let dream on

Hamish, Thanks for posting that up! The hunting here is pretty amazing, if for nothing more than just the number of trophy animals and the fact that there are no bag limits on these indigenous deer.

Years ago when I first got licensed I mentioned to people in the ministry of environment that foreigners would love to hunt here, I figured no interest was taken. But with the ridiculous number of deer and their inability to control them many things never could be imagined a few years ago are now in place such as silencers, helicopters, and spotlights.

Now there has been an interest in letting foreign hunters come over from politians, professors, biologists, etc. It's funny, when the right people want to get something done here in Japan, well, it just happens. Although it is an uphill battle, it is not a just dream for you to toss aside london. Mass influx? There never has been a mass influx of people wanting to come over anyway. This is not something that would be implied across Japan, but locally here where there is a serious deer problem.

One thing is for sure, at some point there will be foreigners hunting here. The more people who sign that petition the better.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I do agree that the bureaucracy is so stifling that it would take a while.

Currently Japan is badly hurting from the sharp decline in tourists, particularly in the North, so maybe something might come of it. Of course, I know of NO rifle hunting in Japan (I could be wrong) and I do not have the first idea how I could bring a rifle here myself after almost 20 years. My father in law living in a rural part of Japan had a shotgun but he sold it because the paperwork was so onerous.

Nice article in one of the national papers today on hunting in Kyoto Prefecture for deer and wild boar. http://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201109270316.html
