Renaud just returned from Azerbaijan from guiding some clients for Tur.
In his own words:
One very important thing in Caucasus is good Weather !
One week before us, rain storm done flood (destroying some bridges) and by chance we arrived the week after.
We took 6 hours to go up from last village to main camp (1600 meters). Normally it's take 3 hours. It was necessary to reorganize each river passages.
Then good weather is necessary to spot the Turs herds in the mountain. Caucasus is very rainy place and if rain, it's mean :
- First it is not comfortable to stay under tents when strong rain
- Second not comfortable to climb under rain
- Third, after rain there is fog
By chance we had a beautiful weather.
One hunter shot the first morning.
The one's I was guiding, shot that heavy Tur the second day.
After I was inviting a journalist and allow him to shoot... he missed two times on differents herds... some great tur. We go down the Fourth day.
We saw Bear, female with cub. But no chamois because I was very high. Chamois are living around 2000 in the walls in the forest.
In may and till mid-june, there is still snow on the top, Tur are quite low altitude. Around 2000-2500
In mid june-july, they go on the alpage between 2800 and 3400 (top is 3600)
In august, sheperds are on the top with horses and sheeps, and tur go down in very deep stony walls.
And locals prefer to organize "zagon", driving the game to the direction of hunters.
Personally i prefer to go in spring because i can stalk. Even if the skins are not so good.
