Tx6BROpening Oklahoma's Pheasant
This is Ben and my latest Browning 525 16ga on opening day in the Oklahoma Panhandle. We limited everyday and I managed a sweet double on the last day of the hunt. I think this will be my new upland gun. It is awesome to shoot.

The ShottistDid you go to a preserve, or was it public land?
We are thinking about going there in a couple of weeks.
Cabella's just listed a sale on the Brownings, $200 off right now.

Tx6BRThis is private land,,,,my family's. All wild birds and were they ever wild this year. Tough to get them to stick since it was so dry and windy. Saturday we hunted in 50mph winds.

VinnyGlad to hear the pheasant is plentiful in the Sooner Nation. They are my absolute favorite bird to hunt.

graybirdThe winds on opening day were about the worst I've ever hunted upland birds in. Sustained winds at about 40 with gusts over 60 mph. We ended up with about a dozen birds, which I would have been happy with 2-3, plus about 20 quail.
Sunday was nice and just the total opposite. Can't wait to get back down there just before Christmas!

Tx6BRI'm trying to get back up on Thursday. Talked to the Cuz last night and lots of snow up there right now. Maybe it will help make the birds stick. Just have to see what the weather does. I got caught in an ice storm up there two years ago. Hunting was at its' best, coming back was a mess north of Amarillo.

graybirdIf there is any kind of snow, we usually find them in the thick stuff. But we found most of the birds during the wind opening day in the same place. Guess they too were trying to get out of the wind. Seemed like if we found 1 there would be able two dozen with him. One little spot we walked on Sunday afternoon, I bet there were about 4 dozen pheasants come out of it.
I think my wife and I are going to head down to the panhandle on Friday morning to hunt that afternoon and then part of Saturday before heading down to OKC for the holidays. I've got a young dog that needs all the days in the field she can get this year.

Tx6BRWhere at in the PH are you hunting. We are close to Hardesty.
Our birds were the same way. The usual spots had a few but hit the big weeds and the shoot was on. One spot had to have close to 60 birds.

Tx6BR,
We hunt primarly from Keyes back towards the east. Most of the places are in eastern Cimarron county but we have a few places we hit in western Texas county.
Good luck!!

graybirdIt seems in that country, if you have water you have birds. As you know there are plenty of crops/food sources but water is the limiting factor. The old homesteads sure do make nice habitat for the birds and the old junk around them hold the water.
Good luck!!

Tx6BRWe are fixing to put some wells in the CRP which will help hold the birds. Also bring in other critters like deer. There are hog barns all around us and they have lots of water in their pits.
