I would like to get a bolt action pistol.

Which one do you recommend: Savage Striker, Remington XP, HS Precision or other?

Also, which caliber would you recommend for varmit hunting, whitetail deer and general fun shooting? I do reload.

Guess it would depend on the money you want to spend.
Striker is more versatile as one can change bolt heads and barrels without a smith. Triiger is crap but works over very nicely. Less expensive somewhat than a XP 100.

XP is a smaller gun than the striker. Has a decent trigger. Requires machining the bolt head and installing a extractory for different cases. Requires a gunsmith to change the barrel unless you want to buy headspace gauges and have a smith set up several barrels for your gun. You will need a barrel vise and a action wrench as well.

Then there is the new American Gun Company action coming out very soon. Setup will include a rear grip and have the best of the both listed above and some industry changing extras. Jewel trigger available, match grade barrels. All for less than half of a custom XP.

I like my stryker.. after the trigger got fixed!! If I could get whatever I wanted This same Stryker or a weatherby, would be it!!Unfortunately the Wby will have to be used now. As they don't seem to make em anymore!! MV

All good choices, The HS will be the most $$ but if that is not a problem I would go that direction.

I like my Stryker a lot. It is extremely (honest 1/4") accurate. The trigger is rough but manageable.

Another very viable option is to buy the Savage Targt Action. You can purchase these as undesignated actions and can use them to build a pistol. The trigger on them is adjustable down to about 6 oz. $450 for the action, $350 for a custom barrel and about $250 for a rear grip stock.

With the Stryker you can change the barrel on it easily too. Get yourself a 7mm-08 for deer!

back when sooting IHMSA silhoutte was the rage, i bought a rem xp-100 in 7br... dies and brass were hard to find ( this was the early 80's, before al gore invented the internet).... jimmy mitchell in breckenridge convinced me to ream to full length 7-308, cut the barrel off 2" and drill, tap for bases... it shot the 162 gr hornady boat tail #2845, really well... recoil was mild, i had a king tube, tube sight on it... kept the brown plastic stock, and it would shoot less 1 moa at 100 meters... wish i had kept it.....

My Striker is scary accurate although a bit more difficult to shoot than a rifle. It is a 7mm-08 and I shoot 139 SST's out of it. Recoil is snappy, to say the least, but it isn't unmanageable by any stretch. I have a 2-7 scope on it and it shoots 1/2 moa. It is one of the most accurate firearms I own. I think some of it is due to the short barrel with no vibration, some is due to the Savage barrel headspace system, and some is due to the work we did on our triggers.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another one if I needed it. We can use them in counties where deer hunting is limited to shotguns and handguns. It gives me far better range than a 12 gauge with slugs or a .44 magnum. I figure I should be comfortable out to 300 yards with a good rest.

If you get an XP, I had a bolt made that uses Savage bolt faces and are interchangable using a Remington firing pin removal tool, all three bolt faces have been fit to the bolt.It has an XP-100R bolt handle. I had this built for my switch bbl XP. L am a lot older now and intrest have changed. I would sell it now

I have a Striker in 17HMR. How difficult is it to make it shoot .223s? What do I need to do to make the conversion?

So sorry it can't be done. The action was designed specificly for a rimfire and those rimfire cartridges.
