I love to hunt. I have taken up bow hunting again, always rifle hunted, now want to take up ML hunting. My question, which to buy. My criteria and game follow.

I will be hunting deer and hogs.
I hunt rain or shine.
I hunt in Kansas and West Texas so my shots can be rather long so I want a ML (i know a ML has a max range between 150 and 200) that can perform.
I want a modern inline.

Let me know which one to buy and why. Of course I don't want to break the bank. But the TC, Knight, etc are in my budget. Also, would you go .50 or .45 cal?

I would highly recommend an Austin and Halleck 320. There is acutally one for sale in the classifieds on this site. They are excellant performing rifles. I am in the same boat and need a long range shooter. mine shoots the lighter sabots 250-240grn into moa or less. The bullet wieghts will give you the speed and trajectory needed to make 200+yd shots. I am going to try the 200grn tc shockwaves and see how these shoot, if they shoot good I will use these and juice up the powder charge until accuracy goes away. I have a Savage ML II it is a grate rifle. you can shoot smokeless powder or black powder. I have killed deer at 200+ yd's. with it. Useing smokeless powred you don't get the cloud of smoke you get with black powder.

Savage ML10II is the only way to go.

It's The Strongest Muzzleloader on the Market and one of the most accurate as well. The Accutrigger is probably one of the best MLer triggers out too.

You can get the Blue/Black Model for $379 (last time I looked) at Natchez shooters supply. That's the lowest price I've seen on them.

savage ml10II is the only choice not too expensive and is very accurate by far in my opinion to be the most advanced muzzleloader on the market

I have a stainless T/C Omega .50 which I think is pretty close to perfect with the right bullet and powder combination for Black Powder or synthetics. If you decide on the Savage make sure you get a new one with the accutrigger and ask about the new longer life vent liner or you will be replacing vent liners every 50 or 100 shots at about $3.00 a pop. If you can shoot smokeless where you are for hunting I would go with the Savage.

I have the Encore and the Savage inlines. The
nostalgia of watching the belching smoke pour out
of the barrel got to be a handicap when the target
is obscured for several seconds in no-wind, humid
conditions.

For the wide variety of bullet selection, I would
recommend a .50, but the rifle certainly has a
LOT to do with personal preference. Whatever you
get, do it soon enough so there is time for load
development.

Of accurate, long distance shooting, the
following all have good reputations:

T/C Omega
Savage
Knight Disc Extreme

My own personal preference is the Savage with
stainless barrel on the laminated stock (just
do not care for any plastic stock). It will
shoot both BP/substitutes and smokeless. The
learning curve is higher, but if you're up to
it, the rewards are outstanding.

Any good in-line will do. I prefer my CVA Kodiak .50 cal. Remember, if you are going to use a .45 cal in Kansas that the minimum bullet weight is 210 grains. It is a little known fact that some ignore. Page 7 of the 2004 hunting regs.

Second the TC Omega or Encore.

Stay with the TC bullets and 777 loose powder. the 777 pellets have too high ES for LR shooting. Mine will put 5 shots into 4-5" at 200 yards all day, sometimes even much tighter.

There is a company in canada, PLR bullets that makes a line of super long bullets that work extremely well at even longer distances in the TC guns.

If you like the easier cleaning/less blowback drop actions, the Thompson Omega/ Encore & Knight Revolutions await you.

You can't go wrong with any of these. If I were just starting & were to buy 3 MLs to last a lifetime, I would buy.....

T/C Encore (centerfire barrel options)
Austin/Halleck Mountain Rifle 1-66" twist (gotta have a sidelock)

For my money, buy a White. They are available for a song from www.whiterifles.com, and I have a buddy in Idaho whose last two pronghorns were shot with a Whitetail at lasered ranges of 284 and 322 yards. All stainless and composite, Bold triggers pre-set to 3# from the factory, and they can be disassembled,cleaned completely and re-assembled in less than 10 minutes.
