Has anybody chronographed 100 grains of T7 vs 100 grains of Shockey Gold ?

I don't own a chrony, but have noticed less recoil when shooting equal grains.

You are in luck Boarman, because this months issue of the American Rifleman has an article comparing nearly all of the propellants available to muzzleloaders. It includes chronograph data using the same rifle and bullet so that the only variable is the powder used. They show data for 100 grain charges and 150 grain charges. I was surprised at how little extra power some of the propellants gave with another 50 grains of powder! I don't have the article in front of me so I won't guess at the comparison you asked about, but I am sure you will be able to find a copy to read.

100 grains T7 pellets - 1731
100 grains Shockey Gold Loose - 1590

Tripple Seven with 245gr. SST High 1973, low 1954; JSGold High 1720, low 1516. On another note the Black Mag'3 was even higher than Tripple Seven at High 2031 and low 1972. To be fair however the T7 and JSG were FFg and Black Mag'3 only comes one granulation which is more like FFFg.

In my Encore Pro Hunter:

250gr XTP
MMP sabot
100grs FFg T7 1935fps
100grs JS Gold 1522fps
2 50gr T7 magnum pellets 1925fps.

I noticed less recoil too...guess the extra 400fps is why T7 kicks more.

Can anyone say how this compares to Pyrodex?

Same article in American Rifleman has 100gr. Pyrodex RS with same 245gr. bullet High 1867 and low 1826.

The American Rifleman article was extremely well done. It is important to understand that it was done with a Knight Rolling block which has a 27 inch barrel. Shorter barrels will shoot a lot differently. Powders like Tripple Seven that have quick light off time will do better than powders like real black or even most of the ascorbic acid as they tend to light off slower and develop pressure and velocity as they go up the barrel (longer barrel more velocity etc.). I also found one error in the Black Mag'3 data. He listed a 100gr. high at 2031 and when he went to 150gr. he listed the high at 1661. Based on the 150gr. average of 2342 I think the high was actually 2661.
