don444Dry Firing
What is the best way to dry fire a traditional muzzleloading rifle? Thanks in advance.
Good question!
I don't know about the "best" way, but I just keep some spare nipples and replace one if it gets too mashed and snap away if I feel like it. I tried making a guard a long time ago out of shoe leather but they do not last that long and then you are back to snapping hammers...
go to the local pet store and buy a piece of clear air tube.cut off a piece about 1/2" or so,and stick it on the nipple.it will be long.trim it down so it fits in the hammer nose when you dry fire.I have used one for many dry fires with no visible wear.if your hear the hammer hit the nipple,it is too short.it should be a nice soft thud, not a metallic clank.

MarkDon,
It is in your signature (you can see the post above this one I turned your signature off and it is gone).
To do this, in the upper left corner click GO -> PROFILE -> View/Edit Complete Profile and then scroll down, it is towards the bottom of the list.
