WoodmnctryRate of twist for a Maxi ball
What is the best rate of twist for a Maxi bullet? The current rage is to utilize Sabots but here in Colorado we have to use solid lead projectiles - thus -- it appears that most modern inlines are designed for bullets using a sabot system -- thus the question -- what rate of twist do we need to look for to use the more traditional maxi type of bullet?

BlankI get great accuracy and stabilization in my 1-48" twist guns with both the 320 and 370 grain 50 cailber Maxi-Ball. They have been key-holing at 1-60" or above, tho. It does not seem to be any different if I use it in 1-24 or 28" in-lines, either. The Hornady GP bullet seems to be the most accurate of all-lead bullets in any of my guns, tho.
I think 1-38 was considered best for conicals.1-48 was for both conicals and rb.

WoodmnctryWhat is the twist rate on Rem Model 700?

llamapackerThe "standard" twist in a gun designed for roundballs is either 1:60 or 1:72. The 1:48 twist was origianly used for conicals (maxi-balls), and still gave fair accuracy for round balls. You can go to even faster twists (1:36) for conicals, but you loose all hope of ever getting good results with a round ball. I realize most people these days could care less how well round balls shoot, and most in-line manufacturers agree, hence faster twist rates are showing up. Pure lead conicals can not generally be rotated as fast as quality sabots, so you are better off staying in the 1:36-48 range.
I have a Rem 700ML that shoots power belts quite well, but is even more accurate with Barnes sabots. I haven't measured the twist, but assume it is fairly fast.

Good Luck.
