I would rather use a 54Cal. on elk. You guys must have tuff elk were you hunt! I'v never had a problem taking elk with a round ball in my 54 loaded with 120grs of Clean shot or H-777. Not one of them ever went more that 50 yards! Guess its were you place your shot huh..
