Would a good paper patch bullit match a sabot? With the same powder and bullit wieght same gun. Just something that I was wondering about.

Idaho RonThere is more to it than that. Most guys are shooting .45 cal bullets in a 50 or a 54. You can't paper patch a 45 to a 50. At least I have never heard of anyone doing it.
Now if your barrel has the correct twist, and you have a bullet that is the correct size and the patched bullet is tight, yes. A paper patched bullet is as accurate as a sabot. In fact I think they are a little more accurate. I am Paper patching for mine and they shoot great with the PP. Ron

Cuda54I was talking with friends and it came up. Trying a .459 500gr and patching it to 50cal in a 1 in 28 twist. How would it really shoot or fall on it's face?

Idaho RonWith a bullet that small the problem would be that the bullet would not be truly centered. When you have a very thin patch it centers perfectly. What you would be doing is going up at least .042 to .045 That is way too much. You would also get wicked blow by past the bullet. I won't work. Now if you bullet was .496 you would give it two wraps and it would work like a charm. Ron

shorthairRon I remember reading something from Ross Sefried about paper patching to bump up in caliber, I believe he was writing about being able to use premium bullets in like 8 mm from .30 cal & the like but it may work well for a ML if the paper isn't too abrasive on the barrel.

Idaho RonFrom what I understand a bullet can only be about .008 or so smaller than the bore to maintain good accuracy. If someone has paper patched a 45 up to a 50 I would like to hear how it went. I would doubt that a 45 bullet could bump up to a 50 cal bore but I would be willing to listen to a test. Ron. Ron

sharpsguyBeen there, done that in a 50 caliber Encore several years ago. Patching a 458 or 459 bullet up WON'T work. Take a .487 or .490 bullet and patch it with two wraps of .0025 paper, and it works like a charm.

Idaho RonThanks for the input, I didn't think it would work. Ron
