Updates: Brazil Supreme Court votes to convict Bolsonaro on all charges

Here’s what happened today

This live page will soon be closed. Here were today’s top events:

A third justice on a Supreme Court panel has voted to convict former President Bolsonaro on charges related to plotting a coup to stay in power after his 2022 election loss.
The latest vote gives the five-member panel a majority to convict the former president, with sentencing expected on Friday. One more justice is set to vote on the matter later today. Another broke from his colleagues yesterday in voting to annul the trial.
The vote represents the first time in Brazil’s history that a court has ruled to hold a leader accountable for an alleged coup attempt.
Bolsonaro’s son has said the vote could lead to more US sanctions on Brazilian officials, with US President Trump earlier pledging support for his father.
Trump has decried the vote, saying it’s “very bad for Brazil”.

Bolsonaro’s conviction opens up space for new figures on Brazilian right

While Bolsonaro remains an important figure on the Brazilian right, Andre Pagliarini, a scholar on Latin America and author of a book about left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, says that other conservative figures could now compete to take his place and win his support as the country approaches the 2026 elections.

“Bolsonaro remains the central figure of the Brazilian far right. That doesn’t change with today’s verdict,” Pagliarini told Al Jazeera in a message.

“There are political actors in his ideological camp, however, who are eager to move past this drama to look ahead to next year’s high-stakes presidential race, a process that Bolsonaro’s trial had effectively put on ice. There are many names seeking Bolsonaro’s blessing, not all particularly competitive in the polls, but all have been operating in more or less hushed tones. Now, we can expect the process of deciding on an alternate candidate to heat up.”

My God, Brazil has a more honest and principled government than the US!

At least while the Republicans are in charge.

So does Nigeria and Zimbabwe!

You have absolutely no competition in political corruption!
