This performance of the song was recorded at the North East Regional Folk Alliance Conference in Stamford Ct in November 2019. You can't hear it very well here but 800 in the audience sang along. President Obama loves America and dedicated his adult life to making America, American Dream more accessible to every citizen. We can disagree on the policy. Trump does not. Trump proved with the Big Lie, Jam 6, his plan to unconstitutionally overturn the election through de-certification, his unconstitutional directive to his VP, his permitting violence to keep him in power, his calm to suspend the Constitution, his comments on the Medal of Honor that Trump hates America. Trump sees the presidency purely as self-reward and self-preservation.

You have said that maybe 100 times herein. Do you think repeating it often enough will make it true? Just because you got a wedgy, don't project it on others. The wedge MLK fought through was real, preexisted, and got him killed. He was also about making America better with change. He made great progress against great opposition to change. So the wedge thing - looking at it in a cause and effect way - I think you, like so many others, got it backwards. Obama is awfully convenient to blame as causing the wedge effect. It's the same with MLK - to many he caused the wedge effect. But in each case the wedge was already there, in effect. So, how could either MLK or Obama cause something that already existed, as a matter of fact? It's like when I run a bush hog, cutting weeds. The snakes and field mice scurry or slither out of cover ahead of the bush hog and tractor. They were already snakes and mice before I mowed their cover. I just exposed them. So, think of Obama and MLK as operating a tractor and bush hog. ************* Real conservatives aren't radicalized. Thus "radicalized conservative" is an oxymoron. Derek Chauvin was a POS, as was the man he killed. Chauvin needed to face justice. George Floyd needed to be held up as an example of what can happen when one pursues a life of crime. Obama's handling of that incident, in his public remarks, was one of his great failures. If Chauvin had been black and Floyd white, would the national response have been the same? When a black cop gunned down a white woman in Minneapolis, was the response the same? what was Obama's response to that incident? The fact is, if any of these incidents had been reported without any mention of race, justice would have been much better served, but we can't do that. Instead, various groups, on both sides, do everything they can to widen the gulf between the citizens of the nation, based solely on their race. Obama chose to throw in with those who want to widen the divide and did what he could to that end. Although half white, he could not facilitate harmony between the races and instead, did just the opposite. Bill.

That's the part of your post that I disagree with the most. I don't think "widen the divide" was the motive or goal, of "those" or Obama. It may not have been Obama's intent, but his actions were a significant part of the cause. If you don't think there are those who want to widen, or at least maintain the existing divide, you have your head in the sand (at best). Further, "those", most of whom would identify as liberal, absolutely need that divide to maintain their influence. Peaceful co-existence, equality, justice, these are counter to what they need. I kind of think Obama got sucked in, to a certain extent but the results were the same as if he intended it. Bill

Well, Bill, the best I can say is that you have some sort of insight into what's really going on in other's heads, despite their outward words and deeds. In your opinion, is anyone genuine? Beside you of course. And actually, I do think there are those who want to widen or maintain the divide. That would be Trump, of course, and he's not pretending. And his base isn't "sucked in". They want what he's offering. I'm not reading anything into that other than their words and deeds. ************* Real conservatives aren't radicalized. Thus "radicalized conservative" is an oxymoron. Despite their outward words and deeds? I don't think so. When people riot in the streets, only because of the color of a man's skin, their motive is seldom to promote peace and harmony. When the President then fans the flames and emphasizes racial bias as the primary issue, he is not trying to promote racial peace and harmony. Do I think anyone is genuine? You're damn right I do. I think everyone is genuine, just not all the time. When Trump stirred up the crowd and sent them on their way on Jan 6th. I think he absolutely meant to do it. When Kamala encouraged BLM rioters, in cities across the country, I think she was absolutely being genuine. She meant just what she said. In both cases, those people were deliberately widening the divide between one segment of the population and another. You can see it on one side but avert your gaze from the other. Regards, Bill.

Lane Those ar nothing but lies. The US was never an egalitarian society. It never offered freedom to ALL citizens. White supremacists have dominated its politics and particularly in the South. Texas has so many monuments built glorifying the Confederacy and this was continuing with new monuments being built even in the 2000s. When are you going to face reality? White supremacism is DEAD. By 2032, the majority of US voters will be non white. Your fantasy of the "way it used to be" is never coming back. This culture war strategy is dangerous and pure evil.

Racism is bad. Unfortunately, Naki, you are showing your lack of understanding. There is a lot of racism in the minority community. White supremacy is your bugaboo as you seem to see it in almost everything (like the CRT folks do...) So when the minority population becomes the majority does white supremacy all the sudden become OK because they are no longer the majority? Of course not. Thus sthe absurdity of the whole Black folks can't be racist because they don't have power. For crying out loud, they had Obama as president for 8 years, and he is certainly the most powerful figure in the democrat party at the moment... hardly no power. If white supremacy is dead, why continue to make a big deal about it? Why have things like Title IX? (It really isn't dead, its just a very minority viewpoint in the US.) You are correct that the US has not always been an egalitarian society, to our shame. But we are and have been one of the most egalitarian societies ever to exist on earth. As to freedom, well, that really doesn't exist as an absolute, does it?

Doc It is always a please to debate with you. A pity that the other BS gets in the way. I agree with most of what you say except the bit at the end where you claim "But we are and have been one of the most egalitarian societies ever to exist on earth." That bit is a fantasy. The history of slavery, Jim Crowe, segregation, gerrymandering particularly in the south, the lynchings, the institutional prejudices and barriers that continue to be entrenched in your society are all concrete evidence. This has been going on in the US far more recently than in most other parts of the world. Just look at the party demographics. The GOP is predominantly white. About 70% of older white males are in the GOP. All global international Human rights organisations put the US very low in the list of freedom and human rights index. The US has consistently been a party to obstructing freedom in other countries for decades. US support for South Africa during Apartheid is a great example. Do you remember the Carter era when Carter and Young wanted to presurise South Africa to liberate the nation and how the Conservatives spoke publicly that "American women were not prepared to give up on their diamond jewellery to liberate blacks"?? I remember watching that news reel in shock as a student in the mid / late 70s. These are historical facts Doc. It is sad that you ignore them to support your entrenched opinion.

Nakihunter, How long and during what period did you live in the southern US? I lived in Alabama in 1969 and 70. Shockingly, racism, while undoubtedly still alive and well, was much less noticeable than it is today. Interestingly enough, it seemed to be about 50/50 between the radical blacks and radical whites, when it came to maintaining that racial divide. The rest of the people seemed pretty happy to be able to go to work, make a living, and go home to their family. By the way, global human rights organizations don't know shit when it comes to conditions in the US. They are basing their findings on info from those with an agenda. Regards, Bill.

Lane I am calling you out. I am happy to even do this off line by PM. An open challenge to you and your friend. Do you have any basic sense of justice, fairness or honesty? Just go back to the last 5 years and see the history of your dear friend abusing me, bullying me, insulting me and worse. His racists attacks are horrific and cowardly. What did you do when you saw that? Where was your indignation? Show me one other person bullied, vilified and insulted on ARPF for the last 5+ years like JTEX has done to me. Show me just one other. Now you call me a coward for calling you both liars? I have not seen a single thread of decency from JTEX in my interactions with him in all these years. Not one. I have said this many times before. You guys are in a cultural island of isolation. You have no idea how the rest of the world lives and the issues it faces. All you care about is Texas and the South. You guys claim to be Christians but do not follow the basic teachings of Jesus. I will challenge you any day on scriptural chapter and verse. You do not have the simple common sense to understand that Liberal mindset comes from the teachings of Jesus and the Bible. You just cannot accept that Lincoln led a liberal revolution. You can claim to disavow Trump and MAGA bigots. That means nothing. But you need to also look at the number of good ordinary average people you hurt long term by defending the far Right. There is not a single morally credible value among the Far Right. "Small government" is not a virtue when it also leads to anti democratic, dictatorial oppression of minorities, the poor, the sick, etc. What you guys call "left" in the US is way more Right wing than the rest of the Western world. Can you really see and understand that? It is mind boggling that you cannot appreciate the struggle for basic freedom from oppression among minorities, the poor, the sick, etc. You just don't care. You just want to preserve the white supremacist status quo of "how it used to be", in the name of "Conservatism". It takes real courage to face that. Yes COURAGE. Again people like JTEX and yourself do not exhibit that courage when faced with such moral issues in your country or in the wider world. JTEXT just resorts to hate, abuse, insults and racist humiliation. Now you are defending him & seem to be following him.
