Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35
January 10, 1963

Current Communist Goals
EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Thursday, January 10, 1963

Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate
opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the
purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.
At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following
"Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by
Cleon Skousen:
[From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen]

CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS
1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.
2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.
3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.
4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.
6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.
7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces.
(Some Communist leaders believe ,the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete
with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)
12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.
14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communistpropaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers'associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates
the principle of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.
45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

PAUL HARVEY’S ‘IF I WERE THE DEVIL’ TRANSCRIPT

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness,
I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness.
And I’d have a third of its real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee.
So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’
“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’
“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.
“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.
“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.
“If I were the devil I’d take from those who have, and give to those who want until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.
And what do you bet I could get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.
Paul Harvey, good day.”

They didn't call it McCarthyism for nothing.

Ayn Rand's book Atlis Shrugged, was also written in the era. 1957

Funny, or ironic, how such ideology has persisted through the years.

Where is John Gault?

So, now your "correctness" is not flawed?

Hummm

Assessing, approach, flawed. (beats Hemingway's' short tragic story by three words. "For Sale, Baby shoes, never worn".)

Seems to me like a story of cause and effect, in and of itself with little relationship to that which was assessed.

===============================================

How are the Salem witch trials and McCarthyism similar?

The Salem witch trials and McCarthyism also had many resemblances. These included false accusations against citizens, unfair trials without any substantial evidence to prove a person's innocence or guilt, and a widespread fear in the society against the people accused of the supposed crimes.

Unbelievable. First, the Trumpies embrace Putin, now they're putting Joe McCarthy on a pedestal. Does anyone see the irony there?

Occasionally, someone posts something that makes me embarrassed for the forum. This is one of those times.

My embarrassment goes much further. It includes the sake of the Nation.

Think of it this way - it's a good thing that this forum provides the platform so we can see for ourselves and understand the depth of the beliefs.

You can't get this from the media. Fox may touch on it, but one has to be paying attention to get it.

Here it's in plain sight.

Just saying - some of that crap in your commie manifesto, which you claim is the Dem platform, looks awfully familiar per Trumpism.

And that stuff you posted, supposedly said by Paul Harvey, is a lot like a derivative of Ayn Rand's book.

I have to assume that you believe the crap you post. Excuse me for interpolating the rest.

This is the kind of crap that enabled Trump to get traction in the first place, and still does.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_McCarthy

Edward R. Murrow, See It Now

Edward R. Murrow, pioneer in broadcast journalism.
Even before McCarthy's clash with Welch in the hearings, one of the most prominent attacks on McCarthy's methods was an episode of the television documentary series See It Now, hosted by journalist Edward R. Murrow, which was broadcast on March 9, 1954. Titled "A Report on Senator Joseph R. McCarthy", the episode consisted largely of clips of McCarthy speaking. In these clips, McCarthy accuses the Democratic party of "twenty years of treason", describes the American Civil Liberties Union as "listed as 'a front for, and doing the work of', the Communist Party",[138] and berates and harangues various witnesses, including General Zwicker.[139]

In his conclusion, Murrow said of McCarthy:

No one familiar with the history of this country can deny that congressional committees are useful. It is necessary to investigate before legislating, but the line between investigating and persecuting is a very fine one, and the junior Senator from Wisconsin has stepped over it repeatedly. His primary achievement has been in confusing the public mind, as between the internal and the external threats of Communism. We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men—not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular.

This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy's methods to keep silent, or for those who approve. We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of a republic to abdicate his responsibilities. As a nation we have come into our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.

The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it—and rather successfully. Cassius was right: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves."[140]

================================================

Don't even try to dismiss that because it is from Wikipedia. Those are Murrow's words. Plus the footnotes.

Does all that seem familiar somehow?

I submit, dear sirs, from the magnitude of evidence, past and present, that both your (GOP) assessments and applications are deeply flawed.

And, in addition, you (GOP) have learned nothing from the past.

BTW, when you say "approach", exactly what do you mean? Maybe you make reference to the farce investigations by the GOP recently. Has GOPer approach really changed in all these years?

First you (GOP) make fucked up assessments, then farce investigations, and when they fail, you (GOP) still cling to the assessments as though they are real. Benghazi anyone.

Still McCarthy was not wrong in assessment. His predictions have pretty much been born out.

What he didn’t realize was that a large segment of society was/is fine with it.

What prediction of his has been born out?

The man was an opportunist, that's all, without any ethics, morals, or shame. I remember the paranoia he caused, the people whose professional and personal lives he ruined. People were seeing Commies behind every bush.

Communism failed decades ago. It's no longer a threat to the world, let alone the US. If you think otherwise, you're just showing you don't know what Communism is.

What prediction of his has been born out?

1) The size and intrusion of the bureaucracy into our private lives and commerce as compare to McCarthy’s time. The bureaucracy has grown exponentially as he predicted…taking on a life of itself…garnering control of the far corners or personal life and business.

2) The deep governmental involvement in public schools. Control of their social aspects instead of making sure the populace can read, write, calculate, and comprehend science.

3) Governmental fomentation of class and racial strife.

4) The deep regulation of private business and competition to private business, commerce, and finance with governmental entities.

5) Government controlled healthcare.

The man was an opportunist, that's all, without any ethics, morals, or shame. I remember the paranoia he caused, the people whose professional and personal lives he ruined. People were seeing Commies behind every bush.

Communism is a political and economic ideology, conceived by Karl Marx, that positions itself in opposition to democracy and capitalism, advocating instead for class war and leading to a society which is a classless system, one in which all property and the means of production are owned communally. Private property is nonexistent.

Only in the crater can you come and find people praising McCarthy all these decades later. Bizarre.

The only praise I give McCarthy is his foresight and desire to preserve the USA.

His methodology and political procedure sucked and did cause harm.

There lies much in common with McCarthy and Trump. Both had good ideas…they lacked acumen for execution.

McCarthy was a sick drunk who persecuted a lot of people needlessly and for his own aggrandizement. All of us want to preserve the US. You don't get points for that in my estimation.

That's an interesting exchange of views. There's truths therein, but they need a bit of clarity, IMO.

All this stuff/views/argument/premises has a much broader context. The words hypocrisy, fantasy, even reality seem relevant.

I'll try to be brief, but don't promise.

Praise, foresight, desire, all seem to me to be misplaced ideas relating to McCarthy. Loathing, historical and hysterical fiction and associated fear and power seem more appropriate lessons to learn, rather than praise, etc.

The things McCarthy and Trump had in common, which are many, may in part failed due to their ineptness, but the part mostly that led to their failures was their zealousness, out of reality state (alt-reality), and very bad ideas. Both were noted for exaggerations. Trump is especially noted for lies, which are believed by his followers.

The aggrandizement was real, but McCarthy really believed his shit. He thought of himself as a patriot. Some still think so.

All that brings me to another plane, in the form of questions. Why do some people, always rightists, have the fantasy that the ideology of communism is an existential threat, all the while embracing fascism?

Did you know that rightists fearful of the boogie communism in the McCarthy era engaged in cancel culture? Think of what rightists tried to do with Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, even MLK, for a very few examples.

Did you know that Nazis never identified themselves as fascists?

Did you know that Russian communism and the whole idea of a world-wide communist revolution was the fulcrum that helped make fascism in Europe happen? But back then the communist revolution was real. Now it's dead, especially in the USA. Now, fascism is real in the USA. Yet fascists still use the (imagined) threat of communism as a fear and fantasy excuse.

There is lots of writings on this topic, some current, some yesteryear. It's not easy to select the most relevant. Most are long-winded.

I think I heard he will be over at Bannon's house for bbq today, they will be catching up with Tucker and Hunter. The whole lot of them laughing all the way to the bank about how they were able to become obscenely wealthy by dividing the American public. salute

The only real threat to the USA at present time is the Democratic Party. Keeping that party away from power entails voting for another that can win.

My only loyalty to the GOP is that they aren’t Democrats.

I wish there was a “viable” conservative third party.
