The Southern Baptists would do better if they paid attention to their own problems rather than sticking their noses into other folks' private business.

My father was against it because he said I would become Catholic. I wasn't sure why that was a bad thing at the time, but they compromised and I went to Catholic school. I graduated and still hadn't become Catholic, although I went to a lot of masses and religion classes over the years. Interestingly, the religion classes included other religions, including Islam and Judaism. Then, I went to a Methodist college that also required a world religions course. Later, after I married I became a Catholic (although not a very good one especially if you ask my wife). My father learned to accept that and realize that there is not that much difference. There is certainly more in common than differences.

Currently sitting on my desk for reading is a copy of the Quran. I haven't read it yet, but the reason for my wanting to read it is to identify what we have in common. Too many people focus on differences. I think we need to identify what we all have in common and work from there. Fanatics, of all religions, are a problem for all of us. They always have been throughout history.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing, as a liberal would say. I, perhaps we, didn't know that you are so open-minded and balanced. Smiler

Religion, IMO and experience is a rabbit hole. At the bottom dwell the zealots and fanatics. It's like a constant vortex sucking, or the rim of the rabbit hole is like the event horizon of a black hole, the bottom is like the gravitational singularity. But the difference is the bottom dwellers seem to have the greatest influence on the whole tribe and others outside in perverse ways. At the bottom of the rabbit hole, some of the worst instincts in human nature are fomented and stirred, such as tribalism, us vs them, hard/rigid self-ID, righteousness stemming from believing in exclusive access to god and Heavan, magical thinking, belief in fantasy, intentional and determined shunning of critical thinking, rejection of facts and science.

Somehow, it's evolutionary. "They always have been throughout history" as you say. But of course, they reject evolution. God made us in his image https://www.pbs.org/faithandre...ntellectual%20nature.

But somehow we managed to fuck it up.

Did you know that the Southern Baptists say they are not engaged/involved in or practice a religion? They say they have a personal relation to God. I presume that's through Jesus, by means of the Holy Spirit. (The Trinity ??) https://www.britannica.com/topic/Trinity-Christianity

Real conservatives aren't radicalized. Thus "radicalized conservative" is an oxymoron. Yet there are many radicalized republicans.
