TumbleweedDamn whiney furriners again!
They world looks on in dismay as the ‘Murkans practice their stiff armed salutes.
========
Australians have reportedly started an official government petition seeking to place a permanent ban on Donald Trump.
The report said the ban will include that of Trump’s family and his entire administration.
The petition has been signed by a large number of Australians all over the world, arguing that the United States president is preaching hate and division.
A part of their petition reads:
“Australians have VALUES of mateship, hard work, righting wrongs, and fighting for the underdog. We don’t need Trump here, a Putin aligned dictator who is spreading misinformation, hate speech and stands for the opposite of what we do. His actions are hurting and endangering OUR COUNTRY and we should ban him from coming here as an agent of hate and a danger to world peace.”
We therefore ask the House to permanently ban Trump, his family, and his administration from Australia. We do NOT need their hatred, racism, and threats to world security here.”

Oh, right! I’m supposed to cite it lest I discombobulate somebody.

tomahawkerIn Australia, owning a firearm requires a license, a permit to acquire (PTA) for each weapon, and a "genuine reason" for ownership, which does not include self-defense. All firearms must be registered to the owner, and private sales are prohibited.

…and it seems to be working.

tomahawkerWonder what they’ll ban next?
In the UK, carrying a non-locking pocket knife with a blade no longer than 3 inches (7.62 cm) is generally permitted without a valid reason. However, most other knives and weapons require a good reason for being carried in public, and some types are completely banned.
Some countries resemble dictatorships more than others.

Do they miss Vladimir Putin’s ass? Do they deport people to foreign prisons without due process? Do they ban reporters they don’t like from government functions? I’m not saying their knife and gun restrictions are a great idea. I am saying Donald Trump and everyone in his administration is a piece of shit.

You are absolutely correct, the knife carry laws here are ridiculous. It's just easier for the govt to ban something rather than actually solve the problem - i.e. why some people think it's "tough" to carry a knife.
It's the same ludicrous situation when hand guns were banned. If the police had correctly enforced the existing licensing system Hamilton would never have owned a handgun.
I dont like it but this is a democracy and I have to accept it.
That said, I have a preference for living somewhere with a firearm licensing system than none at all. I don't see that as in any way impinging upon my freedom. Every country has its quirks and frustrations.

crbutlerPersonally, I rather have a list of folks who are adjudicated as being unsafe and not allowing them access to dangerous items rather than licensing an item to someone who has no documentation of issues and making them give a “reason” for wanting the item that needs to be acceptable to some bureaucrat who’s decision is both final and is not required to be backed up by a good reason.
Sure it usually works…
BTW I do (or did, not sure when it expired) have an Australian firearms permit from a hunting trip I took there. Some of the requirements seemed over the top, but yes, their land, their rules.

I’ve never understood why you can’t enjoy a beer until you are 21. You can be drafted and die for your country, vote, or become a parent as a teenager but you can’t be trusted with a beer.
But hey, you think you are free, and your country, your rules.

And they have to pay, and register, to get a silencer!

Steve BertramThat has never been an issue for me, in my life a silencer is about as useful as tits on a boar hog.
I find them very useful, but we don’t have the big open spaces to the extent you do. Everything I own has a suppressor on it except 1 12g side by side.
I love stalking or lamping or just walking through the woods without having to wear ear cans.

I use vintage rifles almost exclusively, no way I would mount one on my rifle. I use hearing protection when you shooting at the range but not when stalking. I did borrow a rifle while in the UK that had a suppressor on it, it felt awkward and is just not my thing.

crbutlerSuppressors have their uses…
By the way, they got where they are in the US because our good little socialist types acted like your government did in the 30’s- gotta ban it because some criminals used them inappropriately.
Like all governments, once they gain authority it’s brutally hard to take it away from them.
In effect, getting a silencer here is about as difficult as getting a gun there.
We are probably closer to getting suppressors unregulated than you are to getting your government to allow you to buy semiautomatic rifles.
26 April 2025, 11:00
LHeym500Except Congress did not ban suppressors. No one the Congress in the 30s thought they could ban any thing because of S. Ct., rulings on the 2nd Amendment. Hence, they made it a requirement you pay a tax. You know the commerce power, and ability to tax. Standard US government power provide by the Constitution.
Folks must not be too upset by it because plenty of Congresses have come and gone. Yet, the tax stays.
26 April 2025, 21:03
crbutlerWell, back when they did this, a $200 tax stamp that required LE sign off in order for you to pay your tax, and then the tax being exceptionally high did exactly what? It was a de facto ban for private citizens.
Firearms cost less than a tenth of that, and a new car was about $600 then.
You are in effect saying they made something illegal by going around the law... kind of like what Trump is doing with his tariffs.

LHeym500And it was a tax upheld as a Tax by the Supreme Court.
That is what is legally was because back then no one in Congress thought they could ban anything, but under the power to tax they could make it expensive.
It was not anymore socialist then any other tax.
