From a post-debate You Gov poll. Staggeringly stupid.

>>A majority of Trump supporters say they believe the claim about Haitian migrants “abducting and eating pet dogs and cats.” Excluding those who are “not sure,” twice as many say it’s at least “probably true” as say it’s at least “probably false.” (There remains no real evidence for this claim. Officials have debunked it and linked it to threats, and Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday called it “a piece of garbage that was simply not true.”)

More than 4 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe that “in some states it is legal to kill a baby after birth” — another claim Trump referenced at last week’s debate. In fact, slightly more said they believed this was true than disbelieved it. (It is false.)

Nearly 3 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe that “public schools are providing students with sex-change operations,” something Trump has recently suggested is happening but for which there is no evidence.

And 8 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe Venezuela is “deliberately sending people from prisons and mental institutions” to the United States. (There is no evidence that Venezuela or any other country is doing this, and Trump has used bad data to support his claim.)
The claims about Haitian migrants, post-birth executions and sex changes at school are actually some of the least pervasive. But the other claims that Trump supporters believe are more about statistics than ridiculous assertions.

For example, three-quarters say they believe the United States has given more aid to Ukraine than all of Europe combined (false), 7 in 10 say they believe millions of undocumented immigrants are arriving every month (false), and 7 in 10 say they believe inflation is at its highest rate ever (not true today or at any point in recent years).

Americans of all political stripes have a long history of getting such data points wrong and exaggerating perceived problems, especially on the economy. So what’s really striking about the new numbers is how much Trump’s conspiracy theories have caught on.

The numbers on those counts aren’t terribly surprising in context, given the many false things Trump supporters have convinced themselves of in recent years. For example, most Republicans have told pollsters that Trump didn’t try to overturn the 2020 election, that Trump didn’t have classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and that Trump’s offices were wiretapped during the 2016 election. And of course there is the 2020 stolen-election claim that as many as two-thirds of Republicans have believed.

Half of any discrete population is of below-average intelligence.

If you take the lower half of the U.S. population and remeasure, half of those will be of below-average intelligence for that cohort.

These are MAGAts, the stupidest among us.

If I had to say, I suspect it’s true. I know that a Chinese restaurant that I used to go to got put out of business for roadkill meat including cats/dogs. Given there was a photo of a guy with a Canada goose, it wouldn’t surprise me. After being in Africa and seeing what protein hungry folks will eat, it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if they have/done so. You very well know that proving a negative is impossible, and the cities involved have a very strong reason to deny it happening.

More than 4 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe that “in some states it is legal to kill a baby after birth” — another claim Trump referenced at last week’s debate. In fact, slightly more said they believed this was true than disbelieved it. (It is false.)

Again, confusing late term abortions with infanticide isn’t too unusual. Trump certainly was wrong, but it’s not unusual for him.

Nearly 3 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe that “public schools are providing students with sex-change operations,” something Trump has recently suggested is happening but for which there is no evidence.

Is providing a referral to a gender dysphoria specialist “providing sex change operations”? Technically not, but if they refer the kid and it’s in one of the states that have passed laws that don’t require the parent be informed, is that close enough?

And 8 in 10 Trump supporters say they believe Venezuela is “deliberately sending people from prisons and mental institutions” to the United States. (There is no evidence that Venezuela or any other country is doing this, and Trump has used bad data to support his claim.)

You do realize that Cuba did do that, and that Venezuela is in a major crisis? I would not be surprised if it happens, even though I have no proof that it has.

For example, three-quarters say they believe the United States has given more aid to Ukraine than all of Europe combined (false) But we have given about as much, at least it’s close… assuming we are talking military aid. , 7 in 10 say they believe millions of undocumented immigrants are arriving every month (false) But it’s within an order of magnitude of that. , and 7 in 10 say they believe inflation is at its highest rate ever (not true today or at any point in recent years). True. It was in the 20% range in the 1920’s… but that would be apples to oranges as they removed food from the CPI as it was “too volatile” during (IIRC) Obama’s term in office. It certainly has been at a historic high, and it’s undoubtedly the worst it’s been in the majority of the populations working lifetime.

Americans of all political stripes have a long history of getting such data points wrong and exaggerating perceived problems, especially on the economy. So what’s really striking about the new numbers is how much Trump’s conspiracy theories have caught on.

If you get to define the terms of the debate, you can get some pretty odd results.

Again, it would not surprise me that Haitian immigrants are eating things that I would not, and are likely violating a number of laws (especially game laws) and ordinances to do so. Was Trump being disingenuous with the facts for political reasons… absolutely. So are the folks saying “there is no evidence at all”. Did Vance say something he thought couldn’t be disproved for political gain? Yes.

Saying that they are overstating the number of illegals is asinine. Firstly, they shouldn’t be here, secondly they are illegal. The best they have is an estimate. Is the right’s claim too high? I’m sure it is. But I also think that the “official” estimate is probably too low.

Countries that don’t like us do dump problem cases on us. I really doubt that you can prove that folks who have been in prison or a mental health hospital are not coming here from Venezuela either.

The Biden/Harris “it’s not the worst” argument is pure sophistry. It’s very bad. Arguing that it’s not the worst when it is the worst in most workers lifetime is playing games, and you know it.

Why are we so fertile a ground for conspiracies? Probably because people know that the press and the government lie to them for their own reasons with regularity and with no consequences.

I know that Haitian legal immigrants are no worse than any other group of immigrants, but they undoubtedly have some customs and behaviors I don’t participate in. That you deny they do some things that their neighbors dislike and try to say they don’t makes the divide wider. Do they kidnap their neighbors pets and eat them? I doubt it, and if they did that would be on the pet owner for not controlling their animal.

Your argument on illegals coming to the country smacks of denying there is a problem. I’d say millions of illegals daily is closer to reality than “there really isn’t a problem here…”

Are there bad apples in the illegal immigrant population? We all know there are. How many? Who knows… but any is too many.

You really want to claim inflation isn’t an issue?

This is the way the left treats legitimate issues from the right… deny, minimize, and claim the other side is lying.

Are the specific complaints hyperbolic? Absolutely. It’s not good for the body politic to debate this way… but look at your source. It’s also hyperbolically claiming that the GOP is a bunch of stupid clowns. Potato/potatoe.

I believe inflation for August was 2%, with the year looking like 2.6%. And the fed likes it that way. A lot of the inflation we had after covid wasn't inflation, it was greed. Corporate execs have admitted it. It should not be an issue in this election. Unless you think 2.9 million in job losses under trump should also be an issue.

Keep talking that way and don’t be surprised by what happens.

2.4% is the core PCE inflation for August on an annualized basis.

The CPI inflation was 3.5%.

The difference is PCE excludes food and energy costs. The average person doesn’t keep up on month-to-month inflation. They look at what the have to pay now compared to what they are used to… and we still aren’t used to current prices.

You want to blame CEO’s and greed? Fine. But if the government and the media hadn’t been playing games, there might well have been a bunch of folks who got fired when other businesses got all the business because they didn’t play games.

Seems there are antitrust laws about collusion in price setting… why has your hero Garland not done anything there? Instead we have how many investigations/trials related to Trump and his bad behavior.

You need to think a bit. Inflation is cumulative. Lots of things are up around 30% from 2021.

Yes, the fed now likes 2% inflation. Of course, not that long ago (historically) they wanted it kept at 0.

As to jobs, yes Trump going along with all the Covid restrictions resulted in his having a huge drop in employment. That is on him. It makes Biden’s increase less on him.

I continue to be shocked by your total lack of grounding in reality and even remote possibility. I really worry about you and what alternative reality you are floating in.

Just look at what you posted. "Millions of illegals each day"!!! REALLY? Let us say a minimum of 2 million a day! So that makes it 730 million a year! So you are claiming that the US has 2.555 BILLION illegals in the last 3.5 years because of Biden Administration's failure to control the border. That is the MINIMUM according to your claim. It could be 4 or 5 BILLION!

You sound like one of the bottom 5% when you make such claims.

One it was misstated as its supposed to be per month. My bad.

The point is, while I doubt it’s 1,000,000 per month, that’s probably closer to reality than the 50,000 that some folks claim a month.

Doc, naki can't really do math.... Biden and HARRIS have been in office about 1250 days.. the border czar's team says 9 million illegals under their watch.. that's "only" 7,200 per day... naki is from a relatively rural place, and likely hasn't seen that many people in a month. The moderate estimate is double... (naki, double means times 2) or over 14k per day...

Since the 80s, the "offical estimate " of illegals has been 10 to 12 million.. and in just 4 years that population has doubled...

At least the equal to the entire population of nakis refuge...

Naki, didn't you say something about "minding your own business"...

Sorry, but I don't find your bizarre "I knew about a chinese restaurant that served roadkill" particularly persuasive. It's the same kind of nonsense as the assertion referenced in the OP. It's bullshit yet you present it as some sort of a justification or rationale for a lie.

Confusing late term abortions with killing babies after they are born means you are stupid which was my point. You can try to rationalize that stupidity, but it is still stupid...and, the point is...it does not happen.

Public schools aren't providing sex-change operations. Technically or otherwise. Your "Well, maybe this is happening instead" is typical of you. Bullshit.

The Mariel boat lift that happened 45 years ago has nothing to do with the post or the assertion I made. I guess the point is made when you state "I have no proof of this." Because there isn't any, it is made up bullshit.

I am confused as to why you would even post up such a load of nonsensical crap as this....you do nothing but prove the point of trump supporter stupidity....and, your own, quite frankly.

You must eat pretty odd fast food as even McDonald’s is hurting due to price increases… if you believe them.

I suppose you could be correct if you have downgraded your desires and never were spending your entire income before.

But per Newsweek, McDonalds prices have gone up 141% in the last 5 years.

Off a bit, yes. Totally off base? I don’t know.

The picture of the guy carrying the two geese was in Columbus, not Springfield, and according to the Ohio Wildlife Department they were hit by a car.

No, he wasn't "wrong", he lied. He knows, or should know if he's the Republican Nominee, that killing a baby after it's born is murder in every State and Territory.

"Technically" my ass, it's not in any sense the same thing.

You do realize that Cuba did do that, and that Venezuela is in a major crisis? I would not be surprised if it happens, even though I have no proof that it has.

Neither does Trump, he's lying.

And of course there is the 2020 stolen-election claim that as many as two-thirds of Republicans have believed.

https://www.washingtonpost.com...st-haitian-migrants/

If you get to define the terms of the debate, you can get some pretty odd results.

Again, it would not surprise me that Haitian immigrants are eating things that I would not, and are likely violating a number of laws (especially game laws) and ordinances to do so. Was Trump being disingenuous with the facts for political reasons… absolutely. No, he lied. So are the folks saying “there is no evidence at all”. Did Vance say something he thought couldn’t be disproved for political gain? Yes. He lied.

Saying that they are overstating the number of illegals is asinine. Firstly, they shouldn’t be here, secondly they are illegal. No, they aren't, they are legal with work permits and were welcomed by the employers of Springfield and, according to those employers, are excellent workers.

I would have thought that at some point during your vast education they would have mentioned that you can't prove a negative.

I feel that way about Christians, the whole ritualistic cannibalism thing just freaks me the fuck out. That you deny they do some things that their neighbors dislike and try to say they don’t makes the divide wider. When my neighbors do things I don't like I talk to them like adults, then drop them in a swamp if they keep doing it. I don't make bomb threats against elementary schools like MAGAts.

The usual response to a history of lying about everything.

Are the specific complaints hyperbolic? Absolutely. No, they are lies, fabricated from thin air. It’s not good for the body politic to debate this way… but look at your source. It’s also hyperbolically claiming that the GOP is a bunch of stupid clowns. Potato/potatoe.
The bulbous red noses and conspicuously oversized shoes add to the impression.

Maybe somewhere, but not here at McD's. I get a 20 piece McNugget and a large drink for under 9.00. The 10 piece is still under 5 bucks. Hardee's sells me what they call the Original Meal, right now, for 6.41 including tax. That's my choice of 2 of 4different sandwiches and a drink plus small fries. I get a double cheeseburger and a hot ham & cheese, usually. Sometimes just 2 hot ham & cheese. I can get 2 sandwiches for breakfast for 4.00. McD's breakfast is cheaper.

Dr. Butler, you are not demonstrating logical thought.

You say "it would not surprise me that Haitian immigrants are eating things that I would not, and are likely violating a number of laws (especially game laws) and ordinances to do so." The fact something doesn't surprise you does not make it so. This is innuendo of the basest sort. THOSE people eat different stuff, so they are BAD. Shame!

One thing Trump is good at is whipping up prejudice, fear, and hate of minority groups like Haitians who are citizens, not illegals. You, sir, are obviously not immune to the worst of Trumpism.

"Countries that don’t like us do dump problem cases on us. I really doubt that you can prove that folks who have been in prison or a mental health hospital are not coming here from Venezuela either."

You've got to be kidding me. Asking someone to prove a negative. Trump has got your head mixed up.

"Why are we so fertile a ground for conspiracies? Probably because people know that the press and the government lie to them for their own reasons with regularity and with no consequences."

So they prefer Trump's lies? As someone said, Trumpists are mostly morons. That's why they believe in conspiracies that have no factual support. Don't blame the press and government--except for the rightwing media who spread conspiracy lies.

"I know that Haitian legal immigrants are no worse than any other group of immigrants, but they undoubtedly have some customs and behaviors I don’t participate in."

Trumpism again. Lots of religious and other groups have customs and behaviors I don't participate in. I don't hold that against them, so long as they don't try to impose their ways on me.

"That you deny they do some things that their neighbors dislike and try to say they don’t makes the divide wider."

Wow, that Trumpism must really stick to your foot like dogshit. How dare immigrant citizens follow their own (legal) customs! Like, I'm sure my own immigrant ancestors never did that. Doc, have you ever heard of xenophobia? You sound kind of xenophobic here.

"It’s also hyperbolically claiming [sic] that the GOP is a bunch of stupid clowns."

Not the entire GOP. Just the true believer Trumpists. The enablers are cynically looking out for their own interests.

There is at least as much credible evidence he was a lost fisherman looking for a fishing hole as there is for the claim made at the debate by the Republican Nominee that "They are eating the cats!".

You didn’t read too closely.

Essentially I was saying that while Trump was wrong and doing a bad thing, there is enough evidence to make a plausible reason why folks who don’t follow the news too closely would not reject the claims (ie, MM’s claim of how stupid the GOP voters are.)

Also, re read it. Did I say the Haitians are bad because they eat different things? I said that most of the folks are good people. It’s just trying to point out the logical inconsistencies of the proof that nothing is happening. It’s pointing out that it wouldn’t be surprising that they would eat what they would see as a free source of protein. News flash… you or I would as well if we were starving.
