Polls mean very little because they are so easily manipulated to produce a desired result. Take a poll primarily by calling people at random on land lines and it skews much older, because younger folks have never used a land line and certainly don't have one. The time of day matters, the phrasing of every question matters, even the accent of the poll taker can affect the outcome, which is why it is so hard to find a single pre-election poll that accurately predicted the outcome.

Their main utility is to give campaigns and pundits something to talk about when they don't understand the issues or don't have workable solutions.
