I think the war will stop once the hostages are released and Hamas either retreats or surrenders.

Scott, Did you happen to see what happened to the guy who was protesting Hamas rule in Gaza a couple of months ago? Hamas took him to his family, then brought the family outside to witness his brutal execution. The Palestinians don't resist Hamas for the same reason that the Germans didn't resist the Nazis, the folks that have the guns have the power.
You do realize that Hamas has offered to return all of the hostages if Israel ends the war and the occupation don't you? Israel has had all of Gaza under blockade for decades, including keep residents from the sea, essentially turning Gaza into one large concentration camp.

If Hamas released the hostages, support for Israel’s ongoing operations would dry up, both domestically and internationally.
I could see Israel doing an occupation like the axis powers had after WWII, but excepting a few folks who base their politics off of their religion, I can’t see support for making Gaza a part of Israel in the US. Making sure it’s not a continuing bed of terrorists? That could be supported, but not annexation.
