Last night a store in NYC that services e-bikes caught fire and killed 4 people. That’s a total of 11 people in NYC alone who were killed due to e-bike fires this year. Yeah, for sure electric vehicles will solve all our climate problems- unless they kill you and then you won’t care. The fire was started when bikes were being charged and a battery exploded. Greta would be proud…..

I saw a video of one that exploded. Apparently it was being charged. I think these batteries are not lithium iron phosphate, but another type. When it explodes there's lots of fire.

NYC has an average of 23 people killed riding regular bikes every year. in the last 26 years or so the lowest total was in 1996 when there were 12. But you worry about an e-bike problem like what amounts to an industrial accident scenario is doom & gloom for everybody.

I'm gonna have to see something more than you saying that 11 people were killed by e-bikes. Usually, you seem smarter than this.

What's driving the battery fires with e-bikes and scooters.
I thought most battery chargers had a internal shut off, when fully charged?

This was the number quoted by CBS in tonight’s evening news. I have no idea if it’s accurate but CBS is a reasonably accurate news source. Some of the fires were due to explosions when the bike was in use but most occurred while the bike was being charged….

It seems many people, around here included, bring their bikes inside. If it catches fire and you dont get out, your dead. Unless you have demon bike that can use a knife that is.

That’s exactly what happened in NYC. The bike shop owners lived above the bike shop were bikes were being charged overnight. They burned to death when the fire broke out. So, does it seem like good idea to charge your Tesla in your garage? As an aside, my wife gave me a cellular trail cam last Christmas with a solar panel and a lithium rechargeable battery. The instructions said charge the battery overnight before initial use with the included USB cord. Plugged it in on my bathroom counter when we went to bed. About 2 in the morning, heard a load crack that woke us both up. Got up, wandered the house with a .45 but saw nothing and went back to bed.The next morning found the plastic battery case greatly expanded and cracked open. Luckily there was no fire. IF YOU ARE GOING TO CHARGE LITHIUM BATTERIES, OTHER THAN CELLPHONES, IPADS,ETC, DO IT OUTSIDE! coffee

I am planning a cinder block charging enclosure outside for the e-bike batteries.

I have several items with so-called lithium batteries. Dog e-collars, and other stuff.

I don't have an e-bike. I also have several of the deep cycle lithium iron phosphate batteries 80 amp hour - 105 amp hour for running trolling motor on my boat and running the lights, etc, in a camper.

The iron phosphate are much safer, as I understand it. I use a charger that is specifically designed for them.

As I understand it, if the charging goes wrong on batteries like the e-bikes and perhaps the e-collars, they are more likely to explode, and they make lots of fire immediately.

I think it's a good idea to charge stuff like that away from the house.

I bought an expensive charger/controller especially for my camper batteries and the mfg specifically says each battery has a built in controller.

A charger-controller is a common device on all battery banks connected to solar panels. There's millions of them out there in use.

Mike Mitchel,

CNN claims that lithium battery fires have killed 13 in NY in 2023:

You shoulda seen the fire that resulted from this kid here last summer in a Tesla when he crashed into trees. The whole 1000+ pound battery exploded and I think it burned so hot they put what was left of him into a small box.

Deaths are one thing, but what about the number of fires?

"220. That’s how many fires were caused by lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes or e-scooters in the city last year, according to city officials, an increase of 116 over the previous year."

The biggest risk is anything using a shite chink battery (s). If you own a device with Samsung, Sony, LG etc batteries there is still a risk but its very much smaller.

When those hover board things came out several years ago they were catching fire all over the place. They contained the cheapest possible crap batteries which appear to be made with no QC . If you are buying something based on price take a look at who makes the cells in it.

This stupid vape things catch fire on planes relatively regularly because the users fit shit batteries.
