BNagelBlack Panther (movie)
To not rain on cal's post -
As an Americo-African, it was instructive to witness the machinations in my own heart as I watched the new blockbuster film, "Black Panther".
I realize it is in the same genre as the many Marvel comics now being put to film. (Don't believe it represents Africa any more than the "Thor" series does Scandinavia.) However, the underlying premise is that African excellence, long subdued by European expansion, is now overdue and a correction is now in the making. To correct the mistakes of history, "blacks" worldwide must by force the issue.
I did enjoy seeing the United Nations being moved to Vienna, Austria! And, the way of peace by shared technological advancement (instead of the antagonist's violent approach) certainly plays well in the theater.
Times they are (still) a-changing, and European dominance on the world stage will eventually change, but Africa's troubles need to be seen as caused by Africans, too. America certainly bears its own blame for American problems, as do Europe and Asia for their own.
2 cents

postoakIt is absolute ignorance to think that Africans were "held back" by colonization. They were only pulled forward. If no Europeans had ever entered Africa, it would still be in the stone age.

I do not think that can be proven by anyone, no one can prove with any certainty where any particular ethnic group would have ended up without interactions/interference from othe ethnic groups.

The Africans that ended up as slaves were, for the most part captured and sold by their own race.

Texas KillartistGrizz,
Very good point !
One that the ‘modern’ world chooses to ignore/admit or believe.
What’s next a marvel ‘slippery man’ character ?
The portrayal of a sjf ‘hero’ portrayed by a limp-wristed hispanic floating around talking w/ a lisp and saving the world from evil Spainards? or dutch, or English, or Gernans, ot Belgians, or French ?

KenscoI think Marvel / Disney has over-saturated us with super heroes. It just gets to sounding like sequel after sequel. I saw Wonder Woman, and will see Black Panther at some point. I'm pretty much done with the rest of the not-so-super heroes.

Damn good and accurate point Grizzly, but unfortunately some individuals/some Americans will never put aside their racist attitudes and that is sad, especially since it applies to BOTH Blacks and Whites!

Pa.FrankThe very first slave owner in the U.S. was a black. He was an Angolan named Anthony Johnson. Feel free to look it up.
And while this statement remains unverified (by me) I understand that at the start of the Civil war, 43% of the slave owners in the U.S. were black.
How come we never hear about this?

That all being said.... everyone deserves to have a hero.... its no more real than Superman or Batman, despite what Hollywood tries to make us believe.. It's pure fantasy

It could be argued that the Europeans' sins included introducing the 16th century Enclosure Movement to tribal societies.

NormanConquestI'm sure my opinions are outdated, but so what, that's all they are,my opinions. I think that Africa was much better under colonization. The basic African is a savage (IMO).Even as recent as a few years ago we were informed of Willie Mandela's "necklace".Stacking tires around a fellows neck, severing his spine but leaving him alive when you pour on the petrol + set him afire. Her husband Nelson got all the rave reviews from the simpering left who only see what they want to.I still stand in agreement with Col. Cooper on his opinion of the ANC. One man,one vote, one time.

FjoldI went to a movie theater about 10 years ago, some friends made a documentary and invited me to a private screening, it wasn't to bad. The last time before that was a regular movie theater and we saw the movie "Ghostbusters" with Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, et. al.. I didn't care for it.
