Another legend passes. He made a lot of money (especially late in life) and he gave a lot of it away.

Appreciate all the hospitality he showed to me at his ranch - one of finest properties I have been too.

A very bright guy. He was one of the last of his kind. He lived a good life, shared plenty, and saw the end coming. If he could pick a day, I suspect 9/11 would be as good as any.

Well if theres any justice, some philanthropists when they pass go to where the angels sing.

I was fortunate to spend about 30 minutes, of one on one time with him at an NCAA golf regional. We were setting behind a green and watched his Pokes go through.

He was very gracious and humble. A true gentleman. The world is a little less without him.

About 15 years ago I was talking with a carpenter friend of mine who just falls into the most interesting jobs. He was hired to build some hunting cabins on a ranch in South Texas (I forget the total acreage but it was large enough to contain both the Pecos + Devil rivers.) Anyway, the owners wanted to sell for $50.00 per acre. We are still talking about millions. I thanked Clifford for his thoughts of my affluence but I couldn't touch it. That was on a Friday; by Monday it was sold to a consortium of Houston lawyers for $30.00 an acre + leaving the previous owner the next 10 years hunting lease rights. That place was worth a fortune.
