NormanConquestI'm not sure I understand the question either. I know that protocal is the required when boarding to ask permission ,then salute the OIC + the colors.

Live OakI do not want to put too much information on this general topic. It might bring some unwanted attention! I did PM TCLouis my question. A Career Navy Vet might know. A PM was the better way to get a possible answer.

DuggaBoyeWell it's been 40+ years-
but as I recall:
You approached up the walkway (gangway, etc)
came to attention facing the US Flag (usually aft)
saluted, turn to the OOD, saluted ,
stated " Ensign Smith, requesting permission to come aboard , Sir"(Sir if they out ranked you)
If you home ship, typically were welcomed aboard without much else.
You reversed the above procedure for departure.
If it was a new assignment questions were further asked, orders, etc.
If you were visiting another ship, you did the above and stated your reason (business),
Usually a few more questions were dealt with.
If crossing gang berthed or "nested" ships; you typically did not need to request to depart , only to board.
if the US flag were not flying (rare occurrence)
You would only address the OOD .
PM me if that did not help.

I was lucky enough to fly onto and off of every ship I was on.
Never had to perform the standard procedure.
