INTJWe used to understand hyperbole. We understood when extreme language was being used just to emphasize our point. We could easily tell when someone was using hyperbole vs making real threats.
I don't know if it was the Internet or PC that made us all snowflakes..........

ledvmWhen I was much younger in the early 90's during the first Gulf war...I was in Dudly's Draw (for some reason...usually in the Dixie Chick) in College Station, TX shooting pool with an older acquaintance who was a known Viet Nam vet but whom I had never heard say a word about Viet Nam at all or about his service at all for that matter.
There were a couple of hippie dudes in there talking about the Iraq conflict saying how they hated war, it was over oil, and they could NEVER shoot anyone in this type of conflict and how people who could...had something wrong with them.
My friend walked over to there table and broke a cue over the edge of their table and pointed the broken stick at each and said: "go out in the morning and find you best friend with his throat cut from ear to ear and his nuts cut-off and stuffed in his mouth...you'd kill a fellow for that...guarantee it (...with a lot of other explitives thrown in)." We left...never heard anything thereafter about Viet Nam and I still know him today.
Just saying......

larryshoresI had no idea if the Ranger stories were true or not. I did not doubt them. I also did not believe them. I simply did not know. I decided to try and find out for myself. It certainly appears that Rich was a Ranger.
I have personally seen the after effects of what war has done to people. It can be horrible. It can be dangerous. Hell, I have one friend right now , a former Ranger, who is a ticking time bomb. I fear what he might do. He is heavily armed even with automatic weapons. I don't know what to do.

Big Wonderful WyomingSpoiler alert, this isn't a knock on Mr. Kayser, this is to help a greater understanding of what it means to be a ranger.
I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, and I had a staff puke job as an Attache, all jobs that Marines call a POG or "person other than grunt". I did 20 years, but I wasn't special forces or anything like that, never claimed to be. Just a regular guy in the military doing his job and standing watch, tons of watch.
I don't know how it was in the 1960's, but today just because you have a ranger tab, doesn't mean you are a ranger. It means you graduated from rangers school.
You may never be assigned as a actual ranger, hell you could be a secretary, cook, aicraft mechanic, or a whole host of other things.
For a non-Army puke this is confusing (I am a non-Army puke), because outside of the Army you don't go to the school unless you are assigned to the unit. You don't go to BUDS, Top Gun, SARC, DEVGRU pre-select, F/A-18 Test Pilot or any other "cool guy" school to not do that job. In the Army it happens all the time, it is often given as a reinlistment bonus.
Saying that there are tons of people in any "cool guy" unit that are support people. Not everyone in an F/A-18 squadron is a fighter pilot, maybe only 20 or so. A SEAL Team will have 300 people in it, about 80 of those will be support people, who are secretaries, supply people, mechanics, SEABEES and so on.
Since you guys established that Rich was a Ranger, in a Ranger unit this means far more than wearing the ranger tab.

MacD37Gentlemen, there are some things that people seem to think they know but really have no idea how a person is changed mentally after being a year or two in conditions where it becomes necessary to solve everything with violence, conditions like three tours in a place like Nam. PTSD is a life changing mental change that for some never goes away.
Like muscle memory we strive for when hunting dangerous game the handling of conflict with sudden violence by a PTSD individual becomes ingrained in the minds response to conflict, becomes the first response just like pulling the second trigger on a double rifle in a tense happening.
WWII had the same things in guys coming home after three or four years if killing and dodging bullets, and watching thier closest friends being blown to hell by a mine, or machinegun burst. After WWII this was called “SHELL SHOCK”, but it was the same thing that came home from Nam, and Korea. The suicide rate, for guys who did even one tour in a combat zone, is about ten times the rate of those who stayed state side, or served in non-combat, behind the lines, in support units for their enlistment, and think they know how they would act if they had been up front.
There in no way that person can know how extended combat would cause them to act, yet they tend to make judgments about those who did. Missing limbs are not the only energies that come back from combat, those are just the ones that can be seen. Even those can’t be seen on the internet.
I don’t have a dog is this fight, and do not know ISS, but the above information may be an eye opener to some here who were among the group who ganged up on ISS about his elk post. He was in a foxhole by himself under fire so to speak, and his response was only words the same as the WORDS of those who were taking him to task, with no real evidence that what he was stating was true or false. Now that he is banned and can’t respond we have seven pages of gang activity still putting him through a little water-boarding while his hands are tied.
Gentlemen, I think it is about time to put this to rest, and get on with your lives!

cal pappasReceived a nice email from Rich. Interesting narrative about hyenas waiting until the male lion can't defend himself and then taking him down.
In looking at the wording of the original post and being on the receiving end of Ted Thorn's veiled insults, I'm sure the outcome was intended.
I can't comment on the threats as none were directed towards me. While ISS and I have had words in the past (as have Saeed and I) all smooths over in time. At least Rich called a spade a spade and didn't hide behind carefully chosen words to mask the insult.
Personally, I would trade 1000 Edmonds for ISS.

Cal,
If my goal was to insult you it would not have be veiled.
You and I have disagreed in only two topics if my memory serves me correct.....both were yours. I had all but forgot those but you seem to want to rekindle.......
When you posted those two threads surely you didn't expect everyone to fall in behind you in total agreement.
I shake my head wondering why I attempted to help you find a place to hunt Whitetail deer. However, since that didn't work out I'm sure that all worked out for the better.

BWW thank you for your service, but you should really stick to talking about the Navy. A Ranger belongs in one of the three Ranger Battalions, or in the 75th Ranger Regiment, any one who is not in these units and has completed Ranger school is just Tabbed. I know you basically said this but let me explain it a little more.
To get to a Ranger BN or Regiment everyone has to go through RIP or Ranger Indoctrination Program, even the POG. It is a three week crash course on the basics of being a Ranger, the rest you'll learn when assigned to your BN or to Regiment. It includes drown proofing/swim test, parachute drop, 20 mile road march, PT test, basic survival training, and a whole lot of other stuff crammed into it.
Staying in a BN or at Regiment is a whole different thing once you get there, and is no small feat. There mission doesn't allow them a lot of time to get new Rangers up to speed. You'd better hit the ground running, and don't ever stop. If you struggle with physical fitness or in your Ranger tasks you'll quickly find yourself getting orders for a PCS move. Also if you have an injury that takes a long recovery time, you'll find yourself with PCS orders again. They don't want you tying up a position that can be filled and keep them mission capable.
I enlisted with the Ranger option back in 1992, but failed to complete RIP. I washed out with pneumonia and my choice was six months in holdover status or go worldwide assignment. I chose worldwide assignment so I wouldn't fall behind in advancement and wound up in an Airborne BN in Vicenza Italy.
Ranger school is first and foremost a
Leadership School, and earning a Tab is no small accomplishment. That is also the reason non-Ranger soldiers are allowed to attend. Ranger school is 56 days of hell, with three phases desert, jungle, and mountain. You are starved and sleep deprived and still expected to carry out missions without fail. It'll test you both physically and mentally, and the school has a high attrition rate.
Usually only enlisted soldiers serving in a combat arms MOS attend Ranger school and officers getting command of a combat unit, or coming from West Point or ROTC who are recommended by their instructors. You have to be an outstanding soldier or officer in your field as well as a PT stud to get selected. There are exceptions now that are not the norm from when I was light infantry, especially since the Army has had to allow female soldiers to attend.
Now from what I gather ISS was a Ranger, he served in a BN. I didn't personally know Rich, and wasn't even that friendly towards him in a couple of exchanges we had on topics. However, he lived a lifestyle in the Army few could, and did it in a war zone. That's no small accomplishment IMO.

larryshoresIf I ever threatened anyone with physical violence, please ban me. I will most assuredly deserve it. I will agree with it. No need to discuss it.

CrazyhorseconsultingAnd basically that is what has happened. Rich threatened some individuals, should he have done that, No. Have those individuals admitted to their part in the whole situation, no.
To many folks do not seem to realize that the internet is not real life.
Was Rich wrong in threatening people, yes. Were the people Rich threatened wrong in working at discrediting him????

Look at those on here that voted for Trump, they hate each other, not sure why, but it is the way it is.
And those that voted for Hillary loved each other????And just for the record, i never worked at discrediting his military service. I simply called bullshit on his elk hunting claims....

A better comparison is him being one of those millennials.
Who cannot accept the fact than an individual has to accept responsibility for his acts.
He broke the rules.
He was warned about it and was suspended.
He broke them again.
He is banned.
End of story.
Now, carry on like a pack of hyaenas
